India's first Field Marshal, and India's most decorated Army Officer, Sam Manekshaw passed away yesterday and was laid to rest at Ooty at 4:00 pm Indian Standard Time on the 27th of June. He was 94, and was suffering from a lung disease. Sam Bahadur as he was called lovingly was the main architect of the 1971 war that India battled to win. His victory, however, was in winning hearts and not wars. From the battlefields to a quite garden in his backyard, he had managed it all. Tamil Nadu (the Indian state in which he resided) announced a state funeral, and his town has declared a day of mourning with schools, colleges, and offices remaining closed for the day. May his soul rest in peace. Links: News
94 is a ripe old age, and at the rank of Field Marshal, I guess he is near the echelon of the military. I do not know him, but my due respects and may he R.I.P.
I don't anything about this man - my western myopia. Peace to his ashes, and many thanks for the thread, as point of departure for looking for more.
