What is that tiny icon in the upper left hand corner called?

I'm talking about the little icon that most sites have, like Google has the "g".
I just bought a laptop and most of the icons won't show up, just the generic "e" from Internet Explorer.
Anyone know how to fix this?

    They are called "Favicons".
The image is saved as a .ico file and when placed in the main FTP directory for the website, it will show up as an icon in the address bar for the website.

To get them to show up, you might try clearing your cache or rebooting the browser.
