Yeah! We have an great future in SEO, because some years ago SEo was only known to the European people only but now a days it is the hot topic in Asian countries also, So the future is bright in SEO.
I think seo has bright future . This wud go one getting better and better as SE are constantly changing their trends and techniques. So no way of seo getting down.
In the long run I think SEO will evolve and lots of techniques will be implemented, if we are talking about future in SEO, I think we have as long as google and other SE exist.

There might be the possibilities that Social Networks May Kill Search in near future; http://popularmechanics.com/technology/industry/4259135.html http://popularmechanics.com/blogs/technology_news/4259137.html
I think SEO will be important but I think users will be able to be more interactive with search engines in the future. The key to SEO in the future is appealing to the social or human aspect of SEO. Focus on the people not just the search engines.
SEO is now tied into Analytics, Usability Testing, etc. There will always be work if you continue to experiment and learn...also attend a few workshops or seminars. Every site I work on has been slapped together by a developer and owner who know nothing about SEO or Usability. I see no reason for this to change in the next 5 years.
The whole point in google search is "search". People search for new websites. If they wanted to go back to ones they already visited, they could use their history data or choose from their favorites. If you're promoting a good and relevant website, it's safe to assume people will react well to the content, so google's social behavior tracking should only support your site. Google consider those who promote unrelevant data websites as spam. These sites will, since they do not offer relevant content, not rank well on the social scale. So as long as you're promoting relevant content, I see no problem yet.
i don't agree with some of webmasters here who are in favor of this statement "SEO has no future". Surely it has a lot of scope today, tomorrow and forever
