That's a completely nonsensical point. If your brother was president of Syria, would you quit you job? I mean, if you had a job.

Wow... and that in the New York Times -- a bastion of liberal media bias!

    This is fun: http://www.timeswatch.org/

    That site is rediculous.

Well...I guess people are still using the Holocaust to victimize Hitler.

The Afghan Army was attacked by artillery fire form Pakistan today. There only seems to be an outcrty when Nato targets the terrorists given refuge inside Pakistan.

Artillery shells fired from Pakistan landed in an Afghan army compound and close to an international military base in Afghanistan on Saturday and NATO forces returned fire, the alliance said.

I thought the tribal regions of Pakistan is No Man's Land. Quite a tricky situation, Pakistan can't claim that they cant control that area. And they can't just stand still when Nato fired into their land.

Maybe they can just invite Nato on the pretext of helping them with the tribal groups, then maybe Nato can attack at all. But at this point of time, I don't think anyone has the political clout in Pakistan to pull this trick.

You don't want to mess with the tribes in the frontier province. Everyone is armed, even the women. :)

They aren't really in the news, kinda mysterious. I guess they are too much separated from the mainstream. Wonder why cant Pakistan assert their authority over the land. Pakistan do have quite a capable army, if they have the political will, they should be able to do it even if all the tribal members are armed to the teeth, I doubt they would be a match for a conventional standing army.

The best Khans from the frontier become the generals in the military. What people don't understand is that the folks in NWFP protect the western side of the country without need for a standing army.

There is no need to war with their own provinces. It might not make sense in a conventional western sense, but it works for them.

The British Raj created the tribal areas and in 1947 Pakistan replaced the British raj and continued the existing benefits of the tribal areas in exchange for a declaration that the Tribal Areas are a part of Pakistan.

Pakistani Intelligence Services control the taliban. So there you have it.

I think that pakistan is going to break in several parts in coming days. US should be beware of it. They have nukes that are controlled by terrorists. The terrorists work on the Pak army command.

Don't you know it. The issue is that you could see World War 3 with China, India, Russia and Nato involved.

There are so many differences between the culture of the Middle East and the west. Our way of life and government compared to theirs is completely different. I hear all kinds of opinions and suggestions on how their countries should be ran and policed but the western style of control will not work. "Conventional western sense" will not work over there most of the time...and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Pakistan is more stable under military rule than democracy. I somehow feel that democracy isn't the right mode of leadership for Pakistan. Seems to bring far more chaos.

Democracy takes time to evolve. It took almost 2000 years after the decline of the Roman Republic for democracy to return to Europe.

At this stage, Pakistan don't have 2000 years, I won't believe it has even 2 years. Quite an explosive climate which may erupt anytime soon. I rather have a predictable despot than unpredictable chaos.

Military rule, monarchy or oligarchy seem to be the only way Middle Eastern counties are stable.

I am afraid it is so, with the exception of Israel. But Israel style of democracy also results in very unstable government. But at least it does not lead to chaos in their society.

It's hard to imagine Israel as part of the Middle East even though it is loacted there. Democracy is really challenged in the region. Even the countries that have democracy kike Turkey and Lebanon are under considerable stress.

Indeed. People should appreciate that Eastern culture and values are not the same as those in the West.

I've made my thoughts on democracy known. The idea that it is a panacea is total crap. It's majority rule, it's bureaucratic, and it's unsuited to the eastern style of neighborhood and township government.

    This is from Omar Sharif
