Search engines, forums and article directories are the best for me. Forums and article directories are a great way to get the word out about your site and build some backlinks in the process. Those backlinks eventually lead to search engine traffic which is what you are really looking for.
As I handle many of my clients websites, I can say it really depends on the kind of website. On my latest project, a free image hosting service, most of the traffic comes from backlinks and forums...lots and lots and lots of forums.
The best traffic comes from Google, Yahoo, Live. You can't rely on directories or social bookmarking site for traffic obviously.

I think the best strategy to follow is try to get indexed by Google(or SE's) most of your pages, because they bring you targeted traffic...then you will start to gain natural backlinking which will make your traffic more stable. But referral traffic is important too, such as from social networking .
