    Hello Friends,

I have compiled a couple of difference between managed and unmanaged services for VPS. Please read it and add your valuable information to this as till now I am not so clear about the two kind of VPS.

As the name suggests, the basic difference between managed and unmanaged vps hosting is who has control over the site. If you are familiar with database hosting technology and want to maintain control of the site yourself, you’re going to want to select unmanaged hosting. On the other hand, if you don’t really know what your web host is doing behind the scenes and you don’t care to learn, managed hosting is the option to choose.

What support to expect in Unmanaged VPS:

    Billing Questions
    Root password resets
    Reverse DNS assignment
The physical server that hosts your VPS - Power, Ping, Hardware, Uptime, and Performance
    The VPSLink Server Control Center
Configuration changes that must be set outside of your server, like hostname and resolver configuration
Access problems such as inability to login via SSH - we will troubleshoot until we are able to login

    What support not to expect

Issues related to the performance or uptime of an individual VPS account or application.
Installing applications not available in the control panel or OS Initial installation.
    Troubleshooting or configuring any software.
General help with Unix or server applications.
3rd-party control panel installation, configuration, or troubleshooting.

Please add your valuable suggestion to this thread and enlighten the user community about it. Ther are still a more points to be added and I am sure the gurus here on D will share their thoughts.

Especailly in a VPS, the line between managed and unmanaged support is thin. We market our VPS servers as unmanaged, and we generally help with performance issues, and control panel issues(lxadmin). I don`t think most unmanaged providers do, but we certainly provide lots of support.

Adam, to market as unmanaged VPS and provide support that equals to a managed VPS does not make any sense. Especially if the difference between them is clear that later when a customer face any issues you just can not beat around the bush. According to you, if you say that with unmanage VPS u provide lots of support, it may happen that sometime you will say to a customer that he has opted for unmanaged plan and he is not entitled for free support for the issue he is seeking assistance. So my point is the difference should be crystal clear to a customer when he/she is opting.

Yes, all of our plans are semi-managed, which means we provide issues on control panel issues, HW performance, etc.....We dont provide support on issues that deal with software installation, but with a vps if you break it, you can just do recovery mode yourself anyway...Thats why its such a fine line. I sent you a pm, if you are interested i am on msn now.

What is the difference between managed and pro-actively managed (offered by Liquidweb and Wiredtree)?
