You've got it all wrong... it's not PR that you want!!!

There's too much talk and over-obsession with Google PR around here.

It's not PR that you want... it's RANKINGS!

Don't get so bogged down with PR everyone... focus on getting rankings for the terms that you want your site to be found.

It really depends on what type of webmaster you are.
    1. Rankings = Traffic = Good AdSense Revenue = $$$
    2. High PR = High Links Sales = $$$
I have low PR sites with good traffic that makes good revenue with AdSense, but i also have high PR site with low traffic that i have to monetize somehow ;)

True, articledirectory... but it's my view that if you go for 1. rather than 2., then 2. tends to fall into place anyhow. ;)

Yes, PR indeed important. Dont forget Google beat the yahoo because of Page Rank.

Also though PR can be helpful in selling links it was increase the presitge. We are experienced, but the early learner still feel that PR is most important.

articledirectory is right. Generally in the end, it depends on what you want. PR doesn't guarantee traffic but it can guarantee income coming from other source.

Wow finally a semi decent post trying to teach these loonies something about SEO.

Good try altyfc but im afraid these guys love PR so much they would marry it if they could! Lets let the men make the real money and the boys fantasize over page rank ;)

Well, if you want to rank well for a keyword it helps to get backlinks from sites that already have good ranks for that keyword. And those sites tend to have good/high PR, unless it is some uncompetitive niche. The relationship between PR and ranking is there, even if there are those that choose to ignore it.

I just love how people choose to skip over the only post in this thread that states fact (straight from google even) rather than opinion.

It's there sometimes but there's LOTS of exceptions. I have a PR3 sites that get a lot more traffic than other sites we have with a PR5, for example.

People have a tendency to read and absorb what they believe and discard the rest. :)

+ rep for your keen observation

    Edit:

    @ altyfc

Toolbar PR is just Google's general opinion of the page. Simply comparing a PR 3 site which ranks better then your PR 5 leaves out many of the factors involved in performing well in the SERPS. Issues such as onpage optimization play a role. Also, your PR 5 site may have some solid backlinks that are not as relevant as those of your PR 3 site.

...which is exactly why I think we should concern ourselves with rankings rather than with PR.

Most sites in competitve niches have one thing in common - good PR. Outside of onpage SEO, it's the backlink profile that helps a site rank well. And PR is assigned based on the value of this backlink profile. There's a clear relationship between the two.

Google sums it up in this sentence:

The above sentence is not a rumor, myth, etc. It's Google's own words on the importance of PR. To disregard Google's statement regarding the importance of PR is common to those uninformed about the importance of a quality backlink profile and its effect on modern day SEO.

Would I rather have traffic instead of PR? Of course. But unless you are in a non competitive niche, its just not going to happen...
