UNIQUE Website Screenshot/Thumbnail generator site, AJAX

Discussion in 'Sites' started by 3l3ctr1c, Jun 11, 2008.

    Site URL : http://www.sprab.com/

    Website Features :

    • Sparb is an on-the-fly website screenshot/thumbnail generator. Front-end is AJAX'd.
    • Websites are queued in a SQL database which is called by the main script every minute. Average timing for a screenshot to complete after a preceeding screenshot is 1 minute, 10 seconds (when there's no queue). User receives a real time status of how many sites are queued in front.
    • Advanced options provide the user to change the resolution, extension or area of capture.
    • All images are watermarked and are automatically uploaded to imageshack.us (with few exceptions of those which exceed the size allowed by the imageshack API).
    • Every screenshot is cached for 5 days (and then automatically deleted). All details are provided in the screenshot page.
    • Incase of an error in the screenshot process, the database is updated with an 'error' status with an updated error-log which is then left for further analysis.
    • Javascript/Flash or any other such add-on have been disabled for security purpose.
    • Totally Unique website (coded on my own, every bit), with custom design.
    • Tooltips have been added to all the 'details/options' in the screenshot page. (hover over the 'extension' for example)
    • Front page, shows latest 7 captured screenshots
    • Incase of a malformed URL in the main page, a javascript highlight is shown. Same way any malformed requests to any PHP file(s) would throw an error.
    • All dynamic files included to update instantly.
    • All images are md5'd in such a way to ensure no conflict.
    • Tested in Firefox/IE7.
    • API hasn't yet been released yet (I've small bits to do), if the seller wills I'll bind that too.

    Requirements :

    • Considering the environment in which Sprab works, a dedicated server is a must. (Linux only, CentOS/Debian with cPanel preffered.)
    • Crontab is mandatory for automatic calling of the sprab engine to process screenshots.

About : Since sprab is unique I cannot highlight the exact process through which Sprab works (but I would do so after the sale). It's currently hosted on a softlayer dedicated server. Site is fully custom coded (from the PHP, MySQL to the custom additions in the Linux environment). I'm yet to confirm from softlayer if a server move is possible. If not, then I'd help the new owner with setting up the site fully (since its a bit complex) in the new server. There still might be some bugs, please let me know and I'll fix them. I could do any new additions to the script too. Sprab would come with full rights (I won't recreate a same site or use any of its part in the future) and would provide full support in the future. I might have missed something here you can check the FAQs in the site.

    Domain :

    Sprab.com

    Expiry : 2009-05-18

    Registrar : NameCheap.com

    BID Starts : $500.
    BIN : To be Declared.

Your payment will be made to a verified premier paypal account/escrow.
Please PM/Comment if you have any questions.

Just to add, just got an official confirmation from softlayer that the same server can be moved to a new owner.

You're adding http://www. when there's already a http://www. beside the textform. I've removed both your entires from the DB.

Just to let everyone know, auction is listed at sitepoint too.

The current dedicated costs about a $150 per month. I've PM'd you the specs.

Site was launched on june 4th and I haven't done any big promotions hence no revenue.

There are some ways you can get it monetized. If you're fine with providing the service as is free then the only viable option I see is advertisements. Advertisements in the "queud" image (which would be on a lot of sites with the API/get a lot of hits directly on the site) + adsense on the pages are some of the options I see, but there could certainly be more. You still have an option of making the service premium restricting free ones. Websnapr.com is one website like Sprab and I've seen them selling links in the "queued" image.

Auction ends : Sat, 21 Jun 2008 14:00 GMT. (I may end earlier, if something good hits me)

    1) Is the server is linux or windows?
    2) Which tool are you using to take thumbnails?
    3) Can't the thumbnails be generated by just giving the url ...like sprab.com/show.php?job=yahoo.com ?

    Nice work BTW :)

    1) Server is linux, please read the description.
    2) To maintain the integrity and uniqueness of the script and the site I can't leak any information on the modus operandi of Sprab. I would only elucidate the working to the auction winner.
    3) Automatic requests like such are part of the API.

I don't see any of the latest 200 submissions or so with a 'error' for their status (which means all of them were shot successfuly). You must have added a 'http://www.' in the form, when there's no need of it.

No, I didn't it add http://www, it was stuck in queue and just never processed but you bring up a great point. Will you stay on for support? Another thing, it would be very important to add error correction for people that do make the mistake and add http:// because it will not be possible to train every user on the correct methods. Don't you think? Thanks for the quick reply.

First and foremost, I don't see any of the links submitted and not proccessed. As stated I'll stay on support forever. You could see my previous auctions here and at sitepoint (where I had claimed to give lifetime support) and I've been giving them support since then. Sanitizing the URL further is a good thing to do, I'll try adding it.

Five-0, thanks for the heads up, I've changed it.

I'm sorry you don't see it, things do happen on the user end that are not always tracked or reported in the error log(s), that too is from my personal experience. Not sure what happened the first time but it did work without a hitch the next time so that's cool. Just making sure you are aware.

There is a setting where I can make Sprab to wait on a webpage for 'x' seconds before taking its screenshot, but at last I had decided not to add it as it would delay the screenshot process and might make the script prone to extreme time waits dealying other jobs. But regardless of that Sprab waits for a maximum time of 35 seconds on a webpage (so if a website exceeds this time loading; it would be shot partially). Let me remind again that any javascript/flash/special embed code on the site wouldn't be shown in the screenshot.
