Whats a good but free directory script?

It dosen't have to be anything too complex, but I would like something with the following features atleast some of them.... well a control panel, Categories, Instant approval for submissions, and the ability to manage(editing and deleting) Submissions. And this would be for a free directory I don't want to accept payments, But it would be a nice addition if that would be possible too. Thanks :D

I would feel that nothing beats phplinkdirectory, the ver 2 is free but you may want to take the latest version which is packed with features.

I do agree. The PHP Link Directory Script is very good and I used it a while ago for a link directory I created. Unfortunately link directories are not as powerful as they once were so instead I create a lot of article directories now which are often much more easy to monetize.

I think this question must get asked at least once a day, and the answer is always the same when people shove phpld down the throat of the OP.

My advice as always, try out several scripts, as many as you can, see what best suits you and then select one. Read up on bugs, how much additions would cost you, how much would support cost you and so on. If you really are serious about entering the directory world you won't mind doing your homework first, it wll help you in the long run.

Agreed. Research should come with any business venture.

Some people have a hard enough time isntalling a basic script, let alone converting from script to script.

Can't speak for other scripts but we're more than happy to help with converting from phpld, esyndicat, site-sift and some others we know we can cope with quite easily. :)

Ok.. thats respectable. I read somewhere that you will convert to your script for free, but would you be willing to convert back to the original script if your script didnt satisfy the customer? I know it's as easy as a backup, but for some it's a matter of convinience.

Yea, but I have a little to spend, but I like to try stuff thats free first and then go from there. I mean I keep all my directories running if I open one to the public. Usually I just buy a domain for $6 and host it on my server and see how it goes. Usually it pays for itself and new projects if you put some work into it :D

You wouldn't have to if the potential customer kept his old database. :) As good a question as it is I'd wonder would other scripts do what your asking about? I doubt it very much.

qlWebDS has what you're looking for. However automatic approvals are only available in the paid version.

Read the OP's post as he is asking for a FREE script not a paid one. Trying to shove a paid version down people's throats is not doing the script any favours.
