Oh, this negative points for red rep is a GREAT idea!!!!!!! :D

I hardly ever give reds unless they totally deserve it, and it's going to make it hard for those who dish out red like it's going out of style...

On a side note, I personally think that it would be even better to get rid of the entire rep system all together. I think the iTrader feature was a fantastic addition for those of us who frequent the marketplace here on the forum... but as far as the rest of the forum is concerned, I don't see how the rep system enhances one's overall experience in the forums.

Anyhow, great idea, keep the retroactive points... that's my vote. :)

By the way, when I suggested that people get some red credit for giving out green reps it wasn't so that we can continue red repping spammers (actually I've never done that). I made the suggestion so that we can give red to people who deserve it, even if they aren't spammers.

When I give out red, it's often on the web directory forum. For example there's a thread about good categories for directories. Some people post thoguhtful comments and get green. Other people post "Look at my site" with a link. They get red.

Of course I'll keep giving out red when I feel it's needed, but sometimes I wonder if I'll ever become famous (jim will become famous soon enough)...

Shawn i just got a question, i lost like 50 points of rep but what it did is turn soime of my recent green reps to red. Is that what it was supposed to do? I mean my last 3 reps were greena nd now they are red. Thats normal? =P (people and dates havent changed) commenth as changed ""Cost" of giving red reputation to someone is -1".

Nice change , i dont remember giving that much reds though Oo

every red you've given recently would show in your account deducting one point, actually the red that is shown in your account is not the rep you received its the red rep you gave to someone in some thread.

Since the system only shows latest 5 reputation recieved, you greens wouldve moved out of that page and red took the place instead.

Let me correct your math. He had 5x1 green light x3 light green (200 pts) so 1100 points.

he went to -5 reds. So he lost 1600 points. He gave out 1600 neg ratings, im sure i was there at one point :p

    -----------

thanks submithblah i understand now :D

This is a bit shite - if you can only give greys to people, you do more damage to yourself than to a person who genuinely deserves a red rep.

    That certainly isn't right.

I dont think the grey (which actually was intended to be green, but turned grey cause either it was in GC area or the person did not have enough rep power to alter another persons rep) would deduct a point.
