Jim, I'd suspect it was just flux, were it not for the global rank (2).

I just looked at g.com manually, and you did have top spot.. unfortunately though global rank is a pretty accurate precursor.

It's still early days yet :)

    Heh.

JL is on my camp. ;)

On the other camp we have the bowlers.

But I have a few other cards in my sleeve ...

This will be an interesting fight.

Don't forget Jim that the "bowlers" are doing it for charity ... ;-)

P.S. I think JL is running his own entry and hasn't committed to any camp - I'm actually surprised he isn't doing better in the SERP's since as mentioned earlier, he probably has the most links from "on-topic" V-E pages of anyone due to his nifty Scorecards.

I must say I've been having fun with it, and enjoyed the support and comraderie; be it taking the piss, recognizing good seo work when i see it, or supporting ideals that go beyond the competition.

All round, no site is an island unto itself, each has it's own strengths, and I've been learning.

Share the love, that's what I say :)

It's those pesky lil v7ndotcom elursrebmem pages showing up at the last minute that I'm watching.. ;)

PS: I don't know what your angle is, or why, but whoever you are, thanks for promoting the PR6 v7ndotcom giveaway. I don't think ND has ever seen this much traffic ! :D

    Cheers,

    JL

It has been fun. There was no "fun" SEO news before this comp that I can recall. :)

    Hi John,

No, I don't think there was much in the way of fun SEO news prior to this. You've certainly set a standard in terms of SEO contests, if not providing the impetus at least for further SEO/SEM research.

It's popularity has certainly turned a few heads :)

I'd say a few folks are also taking your lead, as such comps have clearly got their merits as launch vehicles (ie Shoemoneyads etc).

In terms of fun SEO news, I'd say the V-E comp and it's knock on effect is going to be a real winner :)

    Cheers,

    JL

What does this contest have to do with shoemoneyads?

Also seologs contest was out if I am not mistaken before this one....

Its all going to come down to age of domain and juice at teh end.

I think we will learn that nothing has changed ;)

Timeouts.. I hate them. I just wrote a nice response, had dinner, came back to finish it, submitted, and had to log back in; losing the lot  !

OK.. The post was about SEO contests overall, and how I felt the V7N contest had set a standard, demonstrating how they could attract enough interest to be considered an SEO marketing vehicle.

I don't think any previous SEO contest has achieved the sort of exposure V7N has, and it follows that others may take the lead. Anyway, the proposed Shoemoney SEM contest looks perfectly positioned to provide exposure, if not act as a launch vehicle for Shoemoneyads. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it were engineered that way (take it or leave it - that's how I read it) :)

As for what we'll learn, well, you may be right..
Die Frage sollte sein, who tut das Teaching ? :D

    Cheers,

    JL

The SEOLogs contest was announced on December 31st, 2005, v7n contest was announced on 12-20-2005.

I am sure there will always be critics, but fun is fun, and I had fun. I doubt many other SEO contests will make it into the Wall Street Journal, or get the kind of participation this one got.

    Who knows...

I totally agree SEO contests are fun :)
I learned a lot of new things about SEO during this contest and also made some new seo contacts.... so I only have positive things to say about this.

    -To J.Scott-
The most common criticism I have seen towards your V7ndotcom Elursrebmem contest is that people blame you for taking advantage of the contestants by letting them promote your site/network and only paýing the ones that ends up in the top 5.... But hey! It is only a game and people that participates are doing it for fun and for learning seo etc.
( I dont mind promoting anyone as creative and new thinking as this )
I think the Internet needs more of this stuff... Creative stuff in general not just the old jada jada that we all seen before..

I don't know if that really qualifies as criticism. The contest would intended from the start to promote v7. It has served that purpose well and I'm happy.

    Nice find.

So how come he isn't just doing a 301/302 redirect? My guess is we'll see quite a bit of this in the next couple of weeks as people "consolidate" their various entries. Too bad I only have one I guess. And be interesting to see how Google handles this - I rememeber reading that Shoemoney swept the redsky/whatever contest doing a 301 redirect.

Interesting that Greg seems to be supporting Jim - shouldn't he be spreading some of that Google Love your way Marcus since you are part of the Swedish contingent?

P.S. I just pulled out one of my secret weapons - check out Goldie the Goldfish on live webcam ... ;-)

    HI again!

My guess is that he is not using a 301 because using that is actually the most proper way to do it. Also if he would have in mind to support Jim I dont think he would have used hidden footer links either ;)

What confuses me is that he is a bit sloppy...

Dont even know what this word means :)

contingent was meant to mean the (Swedish) Team - I thought he would be boosting both of you guys.

BTW, you and Jim are racking up the backlinks ... I'm seeing lots of DP coop increasing to many of the pages.

Yeah! its almost scary to check on backlinks this last month.....
I´ve seen some examples on people hiding backlinks to look better and less spammy.. for example making some x-tra domains and Coop them up and then 301 them to their main contest page.

I never had the problem of having to much weight (I guess) but if you would have let´s say 500k of weight it would look really strange if you pointed it all at one place, espacially when knowing that yahoo bl check seem to show really old links that dont exist anymore....

The weight dumping is hilarious :D

Just so you all can see for yourselves how effective (or ineffective) such tactics are, I'll be adding a new panel to the Movers & Shakers page. Top Ten sites by IBL (gainers and losers) - yes, there's a very effective tactic behind killing your IBLs too ;)

I plan to have it sorted by the coming weekend.

    Cheers,

    JL

I looked at the top-100 results recently, and a number of people have multiple web sites listed ... so yea, good strategy is get several sites listed (via coop, other links, or even interlinking) and then 301 them all two week before the end of the contest - bet we'll see a ton of that.
