I found a surname I wanted to purchase for a business, but domain name had been bought by company offering email service where you can pay $20 per year to use an email address with your surname.
I have my online username I use registered, but not my real name. I might do it at some point but my name is obscure enough I am not worried about someone else registering it.
I purchased my grandfathers surname in 2007. Not a real common name so I guess nobody else really cared? Anyway I posted some family history and I have heard from several relatives located around the world.
The dot US domain names are not very popular but I think surname.us is ideal for US genealogy use. Sorry I did not think of idea earlier for all too many I could use were taken before I woke up to the genealogy angle.
mine is taken by a kitchen design store >.< and they have all possible extansions including .NL only .tv is free >.< my moms surename is also taken by someone to bad since its a pretty known name since my grandpa was a known hero of the resistance (WOII)
