Tips for writing an effective title for your webpages:

1-Do not stuff so many keywords on the title tag. You can add more keywords into your detail description.

2-Think about users what they type and write accordingly and it should be to the point.

3-Do not write anything that is not relevant to your webpage.

4-Do keyword research and analysis before writing title tag, so you can include most important keyword (also called primary keyword) in your title tag.

5-Try to make an appropriate sentence, so that user can read and understand your products what kind of services or products you are selling.

6-Make sure your primary keywords should appear first and in the prominent area of your webpage.

7-Write unique Title for each page.

8-You can also write your website name or company name, but it totally depends upon your marketing and brand building strategy.

9-Make sure your Title tag is grammatically correct.

10-Make your Title tag short and targeted for some particular keyword.

Could this be as simple as having "[index title] - About Us"? Or would you have to go more indepth?

I think it should be kept short and simple and keywords must be used in the starting paragraph of the Description.

Google has a 65 space limit on what they show in the results so try to stay within those boundaries.

Don't they still take what comes after this into account? I think I've also seen results where the title has been prepended with '...' to signify parts left out.

I may be mistaken, of course, but don't they take the entire title into account, and only show what's relevant?

Very good question... Google limits what they show to 65 spaces but they index
    the entire title line.

As far as I know, yes they do. But only 65 characters are shown at any given time.

always start with long tail. use wordtracker to determine some good long tail terms then make a sentence that combines 2 or three of these, dont forget to use plurals and extensions (s) and (ing) etc

excellent advice here, good pointers to helpwrite a good title line, but also make it readable for humans not just search engines, afterall if it's well optomised but is a dull titlewho willread it. Think of google SERPS as a giant sales directory where you need to sell your page to other readers

Yes i believe they take in to account the full 160 characters, however the first 65 only show on the search results.

This is how I explain "Page Titles" to anyone who asks. I compare Page Titles to the "location location location" mantra of real estate. That is how important page titles are.

What about Title Punctuation? Is it better to use "-", "|", or "," to separate keywords? Should you put your site name/url at the beginning, end, or never in a title?

I use the pipe as a separator between the page and site title, with the page title coming before the site title.
