math question

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by spencyr, Jun 9, 2008.

I have a quick math question... my math skills are really bad... so I figured I could get a quick answer here.

If your team wins the championship 24 times out of 32 times played in the championship, what are the chances of an opponent beating you?

Hope I am asking the question so that people understand...

    Thanks for your help :)

    it is really
24/32 / 4/4 = 6/8 / 2/2 = 3/4 This is how much of the time you won. There fore what is left 25% is how much of a chance they had to beat you.

Yea I did it a little differently, but got down to the same idea as you... but having failed math in grade 10 and 11, I almost always second guess myself :)

The answer is 25%, if you've lost all the other games. If you have drawn some games then the things start getting complicated.:)

Well, most championships in North America have 4 rounds and are best of seven so that means not to get beat you'd have to win 16 games in a row and the odds you wont are 99.774551841010143374218909728339 or 99.78% you will get beat in one game.

Now if you want to know the odds of winning the championship given 4 rounds and all you have to do is win each round, then they are a mere 31.6% assuming you can lose some games but win each round.

You will have to learn probability theory and before that learn Permutation and Combination.

    8/32
    = 4/16
    = 1/4
    = 25%

Yeah, yeah it's already been said...but thats how I did it.

Damn, I never took that into account.:)

25% is too simple an answer, as odds are in each championship you played a different team and your record against each team is different. Your odds would be based on your record against the team you're playing. Another thing to consider is that you have probabally had changes to your team which could make it better or worse. All the players on your team are a year older, so if your team is young on average the extra year should make the players better, but if you have an older team then the extra year could be a detriment. Leagues quite often introduce new rules and/or change old rules so any rule changes would have to be considered to figure out their impact on each team. I could go on and on, but I think the correct answer would be "It depends."

and a complete x factor would be whether the judging officials owe a gambling dept to the mob. If so they may make calls against you and not the other team.

    Here's the answer using probability ;) :
Let the team winning the match has a probability P(A)
So the team losing the match has a probability of 1-P(A)

    Now lets calculate P(A)
    P(A)=n(A)/n(N) {Where n(A)=No. of matches won and
    n(N)=Total no. of matches}

    i.e. P(A)=24/32=3/4

Therefore, the probability of the team losing the match=1-P(A)
    =1-3/4=1/4=25%

    Wasn't that an easy process ???? :p

    Regards :)
