I'll study in Simon Fraser University so I could teach Math to elementary and/or high school students. It's a sudden turn of interest for me and it means il say goodbye to my old profession (chemical engineer). Do you think it's a good idea to be a teacher? I believe it's another form of charity work which is why I chose it. Watcha think?

It's one of the noblest jobs, IMO.

Have hope in your students, to build a better future for your country.

Those who can, do. Those who can’t do, teach

Correction we need all the GOOD teachers we can get. We do not need anymore that are there for nothing but a paycheck. Being a teacher is a noble thing to do and a noble job if you are doing it for the right reasons.

Yes, that's true. I can recall only about 2 or 3 teachers that had been really good to their students, including me. I want to be remembered by my students as a good teacher who has helped them not just with their academics but to learn a thing or two about life.

Being a teacher is much better than doctor. Because teacher creates doctor while doctors only think about money nowadays.

There is no difference between the two.

    Even teachers have become money-minded.

I don't think there is anything "noble" about being about a teacher, unless one is doing it for free or at a discount to genuinely help students.

Majority of teachers today are teachers because of the money involved or because they couldn't find a better job.

It is rare to find teachers who teach for philanthropy reasons.

I wouldn't say after medical, nowadays all you see is dishonest doctors in it for the money. Not saying all are, but there is a good majority.

Referring to sanchin's post, how can teachers be in it for the money if they don't even earn much.

It's a job of course you need to earn from it! Yes, teachers don't earn as much as other professionals out there. If you were given a chance to choose, why choose to be a teacher if you just want to earn in the first place?

They become teachers because they couldn't find a better job? Where are you from? I believe that if you're a good-for-nothing type of person then you should not be a teacher. What good will you teach your student then if you're such a "loser"?

That's the truth about the teaching profession - it was never a high paying profession.

    I am from India.

My dad teaches too. Actually, he is a doctor and has his own practice.

He teaches as a part-time visiting professor.

There is a huge difference between what a full-time professor gets and a part-time professor gets.

My dad gets $20-$30 per hour.

A full-time professor (who has an equal qualification) gets $750 per month.

No doctor who has a good running practice would close his practice and take a teaching job for a measly $750 per month.

That's the reason that colleges here have to hire part-time professors at such high hourly rates.

    ====================================================

A friend of mine recently did post-graduation from IIT Powai.... one of most reputed engineering colleges in Asia.

He often jokes about it, but it is a fact. His starting salary was more than what his professors were getting after 25 years of teaching at the IIT's.

It is not a high paying job depending I guess on where you're from. Anyway, that is beside the point. I don't agree with what you said that some become teachers because they couldn't find a much better job. So, what you are saying is that those who chose to become teachers only do so because there is no other jobs for them? If that's the case then perhaps teachers don't deserve respect. Is that what you are insinuating?

No actually, given the commercialization of schools, I do know that at least in the university level, students are treated more or less like customers, teachers are service providers. Not that noble anymore. Maybe at high schools and lower it is better. Definitely not at university and 100% not at MBA classes.

Now that you are a teacher just don't make a fool of yourself.
One of my teachers (math) would copy answers from some guide and bring 'em to the class.
And she thought we would never find out. What's more embarrassing than letting your students know that you are copying, while you ask them not to copy?
