I think for some great webmasters it is possible, but too risky, seeing how easy a competitor can sabotage you. Even if I can I wont want to live off adsense alone, maybe with conjunction with other ads program but certainly not wholly dependent on adsense.

I think you can but it could all come to an end anytime, if you got booted from adsense it would leave you in a bad position if its your only income.

I can't. Not at $20 per month or less.

I've seen lots of people who claim to earn enough from it but I'm finiding it hard to think I might ever get to that point.

Adsense income is v unreliable. For me it was on the rise for nearly 1. 5yrs month after month now since last 3 months it is declining. No changes to layout, proper SEO and everything intact ...

So i guess, unless you have some kind of other backing...it's really hard to "live off" with adsense.

adsense is never the key point / question
    the real question should be:

do you as webmaster WANT to work hard enough to earn a full living as a web publsher?

earning money with adsense is zero different from earning money as a SCUBA divign business, running a small clinic, being farmer or carpenter ...

if you LOVE to do what you do - i.e. if you LOVE your "niche" or site topic and are doing your work with all your heart and soul, then you can work overtime and weekend shifts for years.
for as many years necessary until you earn your living by being useful to others - to others in www as opposed to others in physical world when doing traditional work/business.

i do just that and my adsense allows me to:
    - have top server just for me
    - invest many thousand $ / yr in new technology needed for new content
    - invest thousands of $ in creating new content
    - having xx'xxx $/yr to invest/spend for charity and useful human oriented projects beyond my own needs
and still have all i need for happy life.

in addition to all adsense revenue you still need a real revenue based on your entire life usefulness to others. you never should depend solely on one single source of revenue for life - but always have an emergency source to survive and refocus when needed on other way of work/revenue.

hence the ultimate question to answer your topic is:

can you work easily 5000 hrs / yr for many years to come ?
can you work 18 hrs / day or more for weeks and months - again and again when ever needed ?
    - can you work 24hrs and more non-stop when things go wrong or situation requires ?
    - and above all: do you have the expertise and skills, the experience and accumulated knowledge to FILL a website with unique content meeting the need of a LARGE number of ppl?

    in addition
if you are multi-lingual that definitely may help your publisher success substantially in modern global oriented www world.

if you are working hard - any job - www as well, then you radsense revenue will steadily go UP year after year as your site traffic does - thus adapting to ever increasing needs to invest into better future, better technology, higher wages for helpers if any, ...
if you lack the power to increase your annual traffic/revenue, then you lack the power to succeed in ANY business !! adsense / www is nothig at all different from regulra success in business in material world.

    I completely agree with Hans.

My day job is a software engineer... I worked hard to get to this part in my life....thousands of hours studying and taking tests.

Relate that to adsense. I wanted this lifestyle so I sacrificed many Friday and Saturday nights of my youth to obtain a college degree. It was an investment and one that I didn't have a problem making.

I've been working on my website for 3 months. My average monthly income from adsense is $2.50...hardly something I can live off of, but one day I hope to do just that. And with that said I'm back to sacrificing weekends to program and weekday nights once in a while as well.

If you work hard enough at something you'll achieve what you want from it.

Coming up with a good idea isn't hard...I've seen many many people do it. Putting a good idea into action and following through with it to the end is hard.

I use to rely solely on Adsense, but then I got burnt pretty bad. Now, it's just one of 5 sources of income for me.

    1.
those who can live in their own country
    perfect

but keep on improving, increasing your efforts, quality and output to set you free from your current country.
if you know how to get your first 500$/m then you also know how to get a few thousand or more - simply by doing the SAME longer, better and more accurately another few years.

teh goal of every MODERN day professional should be to become financially and professionally FREE to work WHERE ever he LOVES. a qualified online activity is one of many possibilities to do exactly that.

    2.
    ScottyDont

as a software engineer you have ONE huge advantage, the basics for a valuable ONLINE-service useful to potentially millions of web publishers / site owners.

just look at DP for example
a key traffic magnet is the keyword tracker or other userful tools - to create traffic by being sueful

there are PLENTIFUL of helpful tools needed in modern time - just pick one idea that makes work more efficient for any publisher ...

in addition to the "serious" profession of software engineer,
keep in mind that life HAS to be FUN - that's a divine built-in PLAN we need to learn to fulfill.
life without fun is life without purpose

    hence
also include in your current site your "hobbies" - all those things you LOVE to do after or between your "working hours" as SW engineer.

on my site i have integrated almost all my fun parts of life and all contribute SUBSTANTIALLY to the overall success.

some 18 months ago I partially "coached" friends during the opening weeks/months of their new site. their initial months was 100+$ adsense (they converted a small sub.domain site into a real domain hence they had some real content already), then second month a little lower, now much more but still 3 digits. to LOVE what you do is the key to success! every BIT and BYTE !!! self-raping is no way of love NOR life.

    Good luck

btw - any sig link to your site ScottyDont ?

I can live off on my entire online business, but not adsense alone! may be some 1-2 years later i can live off just adsense!

    diversification is the key:D

By stating "i don't ask for more" it suggests to anyone reading your reply that you're asking for people to click on your ads.
