Interesting. Are they talking about creating directories to simply gain site wide backlinks to your own site? They perhaps forgot to write the part about general directories being useless - as IMO niche directories are perfectly decent.
This is another example of throwing the baby out with the bath water. They make a huge assumption that their link building practice using a directory is the directory's fault. There is nothing wrong with having a directory script as a way to organize relevant and related links from your site. However, I would be cautious about putting up a general directory under your site and swapping links with every site that submits without editorial review. Make sure you trade links with sites related to your own and that you think would be of value to your visitors.
Your username is the same as the directory you are promoting in your signature along with your submission services. (Kinda eliminates the just sold my signature to them excuse. , so don't bother trying.) If you do not know the answer to your own question, I suggest you might be in the wrong business. Don't know the person who wrote this is but it sounds as if a script owner has decided to get out of the directory business and felt the need to bash an industry he could not make it in. Gotta love this last bit of customer service as he closes his doors. If you are using that script on your directory, I would start RIGHT NOW and look for a new one. They've obviously decided to abandon their customers.
If it's true, then that will be very bad for the directory owners. Could you give some examples? I don't think google/yahoo/live will do that in the near future.
