does anyone know if this is a permanent fixture at yahoo? or is it a promotional thing that only runs for a certain amount of time, periodically? and is this something the community here watches for and puts up a thread about if it is periodic? because i saw some for new users @ $2.99 about a week ago, but it seems to be at $9.99 again now?

Personally, I would aviod Yahoo at all costs, not worth the hassles with all the horror stories about them. Stick with reputable companies like Name.com, Moniker, Godaddy, Namecheap, Dyandot, etc.

Semi-Promotional, they always seem to have cheap domains, for 1 year and 1 year only. $9.99 to renew, and all domains set to auto-renew.

I luckily got mine when they offered $1.99 domains for up to 5 years.

It's Yahoos way into the industry. They're
not happy being a search engine so they
start putting their fingers into everyone
    else's pie (personals.yahoo, news.yahoo, etc,etc)
I think they want to win your loyalty
    with this promotional thing

They would certainly not be a permanent fixture as they are making losses for every single domain name sold. I am sure all they wanted is to gain market share and when there is a tidy pool of customers, they will bring a big surprise. :)

They resell for Melbourne IT who in turn offers domain name at $35/year.

2.9$ seems to be attractive but from the second year you see the price shoot up..

    Promotional first years is normal.
Price will usually rocket high the next year. Stick with normal registrars to be safe.

    yeah, it's true.
but i usually register some domains for one year and if they mark up the price, i will transfer to other registrars instead.

thanks. i have heard people say they have had a hard time transferring out of yahoo. i find that hard to believe. i just assume they do not understand the process, and stuff it up. it makes sense to me to register whatever domains you need when they come up at $2.99 or $1.99, and then roll them over into another provider like godaddy for $2.07 (with non domain purchase) each for the second year, and so on and so forth until you run out of cheap offers. anyone want to chip in with some cheap first year promotional offers? i will kick off the ones i know off the top of my head if you like..

    yahoo (obviously..)
godaddy (2.07, with non domain purchase.. so lets say add 1.60 if you register 50 domains)
domainsarefree.com (3.99 for the first year.. couple of things.. they only let you register 1 domain per week, per IP you register from.. and they send you an email about 2-4 weeks after signing up which is OPT-OUT (dodgy) for a years worth of recurring hosting.. so watch that one)

    anyone else got anything?

I highly advise you not to buy a domain with yahoo. I tried to transfer a "free domain" I got with them from opening up a hosting account and it was not anywhere close to the hassel.

The main hold up is they do not own the registry to the domain. Some registrar in Melbourne, Australia does.

You're better off paying $3 more at Name.

Anytime you get a "free" domain when you order a hosting plan, it is impossible to transfer the domain. 1and1 has the same issue.

i have traced the registrar via the whois for the domain, and then just contacted that company's customer support to get the authorization code. the worst problem i have had is having to verify my details, usually with a credit card. i just reckon if you figure out a system that works, for getting the domain transfered, even if it is a little more convoluted, it is worth it. especially if you are buying a few domains over time. but yeah, word on the street seems to be that name cheap is the best in terms of service.
