It sounds like you need both eh? A nice storefront site to showcase your products and a blog to add some content. You can host them on the same server without a problem.

The reason I say both is that a blog is does not necessarily make a great store. It all depends on the image you want to show. If you have a growing inventory of guides, a storefront would just make sense. It would include all the payment processors and such to handle sales.

I think you will find that most established companies will have a storefront and then either a blog or forum (or both)

I've tried both, and at least for me, a true website worked better. A blog is a bit "amateurish" if not done properly, while a proper website appears to be more of an established thing (if it's done right).

Plus, I prefer to build my own template, and not try to hack a pre-made blog template into something I can use.

Actually, you can try both if you can do that. Its become easy. If you have mailing list. That will increasing your chance to make sales. If not, you also can try some store or use e-bay.

I think a blog would be better if you don't sell it directly but rather convince them that it's a great product and then tell them why its great... just recommend the product, don't sell it

Choose a web host that offers cPanel and Fantastico. Most hosting providers will supply a bunch of templates for free. You can build a site with these and then also add on a wordpress blog using Fantastico within your hosting control panel.

Build a website for the actual products.
Make a blog for the product reviews and to drive some of the traffic to the website.
