I have just found out that my current hosting company VengaVenga have ceased business and I have till the 5th June to find and transfer my site.

I do not know what I am looking for / Needing so I need some input or recommendations from you guys.

My site currently has a handy administration panel that controls my site from listing of products / page management etc. I have no idea if this comes with my site domain transfer or not. VengaVenga are not answering any emails to aid this matter.

Please post as many questions needed to ascertain my needs etc, as I have no idea where to start.

    Thanks in advance

    Sarah.

I recommend using Host Gator. They are $7.95 a month and will transfer your site for you including the script you are using for free. They have tons of space and bandwidth to handle almost any site. As long as you run your site legit, Host Gator is a great host.

I have a link on my blog listed next to my user name in the recent blog spot if you decide to sign up, I would appreciate you using it if you like.

As long as you run your site legit, Host Gator is a great host.

First of all Sarah tell us when was your domain purchased and from where was it purchased?
Did this come with the hosting plan ?

If the domain was purchased from a good registrar and it has been 6 months or more than you can either transfer your domain to a new registrar or ask your old webhost to give you the code for domain transfer so that you can initiate transfer..

If you have the domain regged somewhere Else I would recommend you go either with Hostgator or Lunarpages.. Both will charge approximately the same.

you can find out discount coupons for both the hosting companies as well.

I've also been happy with hostgator, and I think you'd be happy with the cpanel for administration.

I am backing up my site now just in case. It is an osCommerce site that was built for me by Venga, I am in no way in a position to do any design or coding by myself so I am looking for hosting with a company that has a design team to tweak my site for me.

My biggest concern is I have at the moment what Venga have called a VengaCart, the administration panel that lets me type and list products. Is this part of my site or do I loose it when the site gets transferred.

I also have a email attached to my domain name, will I loose this also?

I have had some test sites I have been using on Hostgator to get a feel of websites etc, and the Cpanel is probably OK for someone using coding to do their site, but not for me I think. This buisness started as a part time business for me and has grown, this is still a home buisness working around kids etc so I need something that is simple to use and add products to my site.

    Thanks again,

    Sarah

hey Bokken.. can you do a screenshot of your admin area?? I wonder if it's set up like ZenCart, X-Cart, etc. etc. etc.
from there, you can see hot best back it up and re-establish your store with the new host.

    just a thought ...

You should be able to transfer everything with no problem so long as everything regarding your admin (files and mysql db(s)) is hosted within your account.

I have been in communication with one company 'Ivum' about our situation and they have noticed something with not only our site but other Venga sites also. Apparently it is not compatible with the new server software.

We had a load of fuss mid November when venga changed servers, almost all the sites ceased to work. They got the sites moved back to the old server and I presumed (wrongly) that they were busy in the background making the adjustments.

I might be wrong but it sounds like this outdated server has served them notice of closure and they have just cut and run cause the idol buggers have done jack to make the sites work.

I have no idea what this software thing is, so any info would be great, and also some idea of the workload / cost to fix my old site :(

    Thank you all.

I had a HostGator account and think them wonderful. I am a reseller and the only reason I left-- I needed JSP support.

With my hosting service-- I offer custom support. I am Hosting-Q.com. I can fix most problems.

    Q...

Look into MediaTemple - I've hosted with them for as long as I can remember and although they do have their ups and downs (as all hosts do), they offer really great customer service and have always been really attentive. They have a GridServer (gs) plan that starts at around $20 I think. It allows you to host multiple sites as well.

Having looked into it a bit deeper, the issue with my site is it is PHP4 and not 5! So it looks like I am going to have to overhaul my site also.

You shouldn't have to overhaul it too much, really. You'll get a bunch of warnings, but nothing should really error-out.

P.S. - PM me if you need someone to move it over and make it work on the new server, should be able to give you a decent quote.

If you want the best hosting.. Go for ICDSOFT. You get what you pay. Yes, ICDSOFT is expensive but the service is really awesome. If you try to research for ICDSFOT customer's reviews, you will rarely see a negative feedback. As of now, I haven't seen yet a negative feedback. All were positive and convincing.
