Popunders... yes or no?

I'm thinking of trying popunders on my site... or alternately, starting a campaign using popunders.

Has anyone had any success with this? Or does it drive visitors away?

    Thanks!

    NO!

i simply don't recommend popunders because it will annoy your users and your visitors will never come to your site again.

In two words, popunders suck. So do popups, popovers, popcorn, popgoestheweasel and other things that pop. Well, not the stuff listed not related to advertising ;)

N.Imran is right. Popunders will definitely make your readers not want to come back. Mostly, this is because the market was swarming with annoying popping ads several years ago (and I suspect it still is, but since I use FireFox, I don't have a huge problem with them).

There are better ways to advertise on your site, that will look better, be less annoying, and still make money.

Meh gotta make money don't you ? I use them and I still have 2000 - 3000 returning visitors daily from my 16000 uniques per day .... so what do you do ? throw away the extra $5 - $10 a day .... I think not.

Pop-unders are highly effective for quality targeted traffic. If you are thinking of running an ad campaign on pop-unders be sure to make yourself a splash or landing page for the best ROI

    I would use popover instead.

Some are really annoying, but if you have the right advertisement, it will work.

I am using one for my newsletter, and I am really satisfied with the amount of people signing up.

I am using cookies, and the popover will only be visible once for each
visitor (unless they delete their cookies).

it all matters on what type?
If its tribal fusion its okay..
yet if its payperpop (it contains spyware and viruses..A Lot of them) then a big "NO" and your site might get flaged as harmful.

If you want them coming back, time after time, do not use them. Other than that, go for it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think the general consensus is "no" on popunders. I'd rather not tick off my visitors.... so I think I'll try another approach.

Most of my traffic is new, not repeat. My blog is only 9 months old... but I definitely do not have anywhere NEAR 16000 uniques per day. ha haha I WISH!

I have heard that popunders and popups both have
some effectiveness, but I've never used them on
my sites because I hate them myself. I would not
want to subject my own visitors to something that
    I hate.

i have had bad experience as a visitor to websites that have pop ups , pop unders , scrolling ads, etc

thats a minus for your website if you really do care about visitors coming back to your site again :)

    btw,

haha! I will annoy your users ! nice one ;)

spelling error? or is it a joke ? :)

imhawk mentioned peel aways. Has anyone had any luck with these ads? Do you personally find them distracting?
