"initially my site was ranking very well for many targetted terms. But suddenly they fell down severely.my pages were however still indexed in google."

Google give a New Content Boost to new pages and new sites, this boost helps them rank high in search results. But this boost is only temporary.

I think your site also had this boost. To get a stable position in search results, I suggest you build lots of back links. Try to get some one way back links from high PR pages.

I wouldn't worry about what PR the pages are, just get relevant backlinks for good sites.

Firstly I believe its due to your new site and I believe its less than 6 months. Google tend to give better rankings for older sites.

Recently when Google decide to wage a war with paid text links, lots of blog sites got penalized due to paid text links. Hence there was a chaotic keyword results and pr updates. Sites with massive inbound links get pr drop while sites with litte inbound links got pr promotion. But generally this sites will experience a pr drop in the next pr update. Its just Google showing its "power"

My advice is to continue with your white-hat link building and let your site mature and you will get the rankings soon.

Burningbarricade, I agree with Sem-Advance, go for the higher paying keyword. You will want to have long tail keywords pointed to individual products, but your main page showing up under the search 'irish gifts'. It may seem a little daunting but believe me, with the proper link building (and I say PROPER, not most of the crap on this board as Sem pointed out) achieving a high ranking for that term is definitely possible.

    Hi again,

I appreciate you guys having a look and for all your knowledge and suggestions, but I'm still confused. How can the Irish Inspiration people (above) get away with cramming everything full of keywords and I can't?

    thanks

This gets more into the art side of SEO and thinking a bit outside the known realm but if you understand the concept of a filter being applied .....

A site could be filtered for keyword stuffing.... but yet because it has tremendous anchor links from authority sites, and everything else about the site from the SEO perspective is better than the next best site.... they can still be found at the top as an authority site themselves.

    Hope that helps.

true_promote, if you want to get more in-depth, please give us the URL of your site and the terms you're trying to rank for. I'll be able to give you a much more knowledgeable answer if I have this information.

    *ears perk up*

What's the site? I'll be able to tell you if it's perfect or not. (I'm a Web developer and one of the best markup specialists you're ever going to find around.)

Mistake number one. If you're going to submit to directories, aim for the big ones that have been around for a while, require human reviews, have a strong editorial process and do not allow sites that violate the search engines' terms of service into their indexes.

Unless you already have relationships at those sites and people who trust you, that's also going to be a mistake. On top of that, many SB sites nofollow thier external links anyway, so as far as the search engines are concerned, those links won't exist.

No offense, but that's the second good thing I've read in this entire thread (ssandecki's post was the first).

What happened is Google figured out where to best rank your site in its index for the search terms you were targeting. Whether they're good search terms or not remains a mystery because I don't know what your Web site is (and I'm not about to hazard a guess either).

It's normal, and natural. Besides, it can take up to a year for good natural search engine rankings to occur.

Read the following (in "mostly" no particular order) if you want to learn how it's really done:

And if you're using WordPress, you better read my WordPress SEO Checklist as well.
