Is submitting your site to directories allowed by SE?

Great post.
I do all of these stuff for each blog but what I have found to be amazing specially for directory submission is that. I know people do lots of submission in one go, but I have found out it is better to keep an eye over DP directory section and add your directories in the new listings by directory owners, like right now I have a PR5 directory which is giving regular links for free and fast approval so that is one of my tip to check the directory section for new directories.

What an excellent posting! I am a beginner, so it's really good to find so much useful information and links all in one place! I have seen some of the site/links before, but many are new to me.

Maybe I'm being stupid, I am a newbie after all, but one thing I'm not sure about with your links is what the number after them signifies, is it a ranking of some kind?

Everyone by now knows that one way link building through directories, blogs, articles, press release,forums is doable.
Now a days clients are becoming more educated and they are denying all such. Clients are asking pure website links back to their site with relevant content. Also PR should be higher.
How is that possible? The other website wont link back unless they see some benefit linking us.
Please help.
