    Hello, as far as I know ws is the abbreviation of Western Samoa. I do have a well ranked, and deeply indexed ws website.

    .WS = Western Samoa

    Of course, it could stand for WebSite too.

    it is for Western Samoa. The "Web Site" thing was just a BS marketing campaign to get people to buy them.

    I'm not entirely sure, but I think that the domain may permanently location tracked to Western Samoa, which is why you basically never see them show up in search results.

    Wikipedia is correct, it's a ccTLD for Western Samoa. People try to pass it off as WebSite to get people to invest in this extention.

    i agree that it's kind of bs but marketing country codes to have other meanings is getting rather popular and almost legit these days. .fm .me .bz .am are all being rebranded.

    there is no evidence that google punishes any extensions so getting your own keywords that would never be available in a com could be an advantage. there is definitely a different user perception of these lesser known extensions however. Id use ws for a fun site but not one looking for serious credibility.

    have to admit i finally caved and picked some up this year, its too much fun getting single keywords for reg fee that would cost $xx xxx in the com, i think with the proliferation of tlds users will be more accepting of variety :)

    I have an email at Toker(at)toker.ws, most surfers have no idea what a TLD means.
    People in the US think .IN means Indiana because .IN is the 2 letter postal code for Indiana
    for instance..

    Yes, in the same way all the major California cities and keywords are bought up in the .ca (Canada) extension.
    When it comes down to marketing the official meaning counts less then the meaning in public perception.

    Take a look at what godaddy has to say about .me, not much mentioned about Montenegro even if you dig in the faq! "The .me top-level domain (TLD) is a new domain extension that represents you. Use the domain for your Web site, blog, photo album, or anything else that tells the world it's all about you."

    Do you think all those .tv websites exist because of tuvalu's booming cable industry? ;)

    The .ws is from Western Samoa and used by the Global Domains (GDI) corporation. I have a PR3 ranked golf site from Global Domains, so yes they do get ranked.

    It's both - originally 'Western Samoa' but later adopted by Global Domains International as 'website'. GDI is the primary domain registrar for .ws and provide hosting too. It's a network marketing company built on the .ws extension.
    I along with many other (very) successful marketers has .ws domains and they can work just like any other site. I didn't really promote the MLM part too much but I make a bit of money this way. I don't think that the extension will really limit your business and google can't get enough of my site. For several keywords, I rank number 1 so indexing is not a problem.
