I want to launch 5 blogs related to music, movies, hosting etc.

    I already have a domain xxxx.com

Should I launch 5 blogs using 5 differnt domains or 5 different subdomains of xxxx.com ??

    Thanks

i will go with the subdomains.

    musicblog.xxx.com

but there is one flaw here. Some directories didn't accept subdomains in their listings.

I have about half a dozen subdomains and the same Top Level domains. I realy dont see any difference in the way google looks at each type. However I have noticed that my sub directories dont do as well unless they are related to the top level domain.

If they are totally un related and you have only few hundred pages, i think going for different domains are a better idea. Meanwhile if you are planning a portal with lot of content rich pages, go for subdomains.

If they were related in genre and sub genre then i would go for sub domains but if they are top level genres then i'd have different domains.

you'd better use different domains, they are better than sub domains and folders.

Different domains are better especially if the content differs in topic.

I suggest you get a new domain for every Niche.

You can also make subdomains. The real thing that matters will be the link building and adding fresh content. You can build backlinks for all the 5 subdomain.

From marketing view, it is harder to market subdomains but if you make your front page as a central blog to your inside blogs (global network) this would do better given your domain name is really short.

get a different domain on each niche, this will help u in the future when your advertiser want to advertise links on your network, they will see your sites likely on many different a class ips, if u host them in 1 same domain, advertiser first impression likely is your site only host on 1 a class ip, and this will low your earning in advertising revenues.
