Important DMOZ announcement

As of today (April 1, 2006) I have been appointed as DMOZ Chief Financial Officer. It will be my task to get as much income from the current directory and to introduce new money making opportunities.

One of the things that will be introduced shortly are payed submissions. These will range from free for some sections of DMOZ with informational sites to several hunderd US$ for sections which are the target of highly commercial sites like Real Estate and Travel related sites. Paying this fee will not garantee that the site will be included. The current guidelines will still be in effect. Payed fees will not be refundable.

We are also thinking about yearly fees to keep certain kind of sites listed in the directory.

As a payment for their services editors will be offered the opportunity to list one of their sites for free. Editors from level Editall and up will have the opportunity to list 3 sites for free and Meta editors will be allowed to list 5 sites.

    Thanks.

Hmm. I'll have to think about special fees for sites to become listed as "featured". Thanks for the tip.

As Chief Financial Officer I won't be reviewing sites myself.

I think Dmoz should stop new submissions, review their backlog and than become a paid directory, might take a while but I think it's the only way they can make people happy while keeping a quality/relevant web directory.

Congratulations on your appointment aquarius. Although editors never wanted a paid model, I agree that it's time to start responding to the needs of the webmaster community. I look forward to seeing where this experiment takes us.

I have one question. Do the editor incentive listings also have to be guideline compliant? Because if they have to be guideline compliant, I don't see how that's an incentive. We can already list good sites.

Whow. This could make me (eh sorry us) a lot of money.
Let all sites in a category not only bid on them self (to be listed) but also on the other sites (to be removed). The 10 (seems enough to me) which have the largest netto (to list - to remove) bid will be listed.

Sorry, but won't editors be unhappy with a pay cut? I may have to return to unionise the community unless something at least reasonable is on the table. ;)

That will be fine. I don't have an issue with paying a fee to have a site reviewed and, if approved, listed. I just hated hitting the submit button knowing it was a futile effort since it was obvious that no one was ever going look at it.

Brizzie, you have no idea of the disarray created by the vacuum created when you took your wind and left us. Our only Most Long-Winded Editor nominee is monayuki. Are you going to allow that? I mean, come on, even I'm more windy than monayuki.

    Go push the button.

This is nothing unusual, many of admins and meta editors are not qualified to be a crosswalk guard, let alone taking care of big directory like DMOZ. ;)
