Iam using HP's laptop. Vista is installed by the company and I only had its recovery CD. So the problem is not because of its wrong installation method. Its all about the reality of Vista. They are really giving many errors to its users.

Now planning to switch to OpenSource platforms, but it need some preparation.

What will be the fate of xp users once MS stops supporting it?

Actually, there is a simple explanation for the slowest. Windows Vista contains numerous protocols for security and they tend to slow things down. At the same time, they had to combat the WoW factor from Mac OS X and thus the extra fluff like Aero and all that.

If you sit down and turn off all the fluff and shut down UAC and Defender and all the unused services, you will get a system which is relative fast compared to Windows XP. I did just that and am very impressed with the performance.

And Mac OS has so many frills, that it hardly has any features.

Thanks for the explanation. But it will not give any explanation for the slowness of basic operation like deletion and moving of files/directory.

Just installed the Vista Service Pack.

Waiting for the response. No error came after installation of the service pack.

Yes, it does. I turn off all that I've mentioned and everything was as fast as Windows XP. I would supposed that it was checking for access permissions, trojans and the lots before it allows you to do anything. I would say that although Microsoft's intentions are in the right track as far as system protection goes but Defender is simply too resource hungry to get the job done.

I only have a Dell 640m running the Intel T2250 with 1gb RAM and it works great under the minimal settings.
