Add a forum to an already established website. IMO its not a good idea just setting up a forum.

If you want to find users, it would be good to try and market yourself online. Talk about what your community has to offer, and why people should join it. You could also pay people to make posts to get a community started, but that is something that would obviously cost money.

Take a look at The Admin Zone
It's a huge forum about forum Administration.

There should be plenty of people there that can help you.
Plus you might be able to find people to do post swaps with.

Normally I'd agree with you, but I set up a new Forum for Small Business Advice 2 months ago and we've been able to get it up and flying quite well.

The hard part is seeding a new Forum, but I was fortunate enough to have about 50 friends and colleagues in business who got behind it from day 1, and they in turn invited their friends.

2 months later we have over 350 members and 36,000 posts - so it can be done :)

Wealdie, I red your reply and just wondering how lucky some people are ...
I wish I can rely to all your friends! I will appreciate if you can give a hand to my forum, too.

The thing is I'm not lucky - you have to make your own luck in life, and this often means hard work :)

I have almost the same problem with My website selling/buying forum, but I find you can use competitions to increase your users :)

Its very difficult to get a forum on feet without much friends around it. One thing you could do is get in touch with other startup forums; and share postings.

Paying people to make posts or a service to give you 500+ members etc will make the site look active and will keep people around when they turn up. Noone will join a forum if there are less than 100 members tbh.

Why not you make your forum a revenue sharing forum like DP? :)

This may attract few people. Also, try to post some threads yourself, in order to make your forum a little alive.

That is a good idea, however you NEED to make sure people know about this, a lot of people even now on DP do not realise that they can make money through the forum.

Market this idea and use it as your usp.

    Will.
