Charles Dawins Comet Orchid - Evolution Proof?

Discussion in 'Politics & Religion' started by killafawk, May 2, 2008.

In 1862 Charles Darwin studied a peculiar orchid from Madagascar which held its nectar at the bottom of a long narrow tube - seemingly impossible for any insect to get to. Darwin therefore predicted that according to evolution there would be a moth with a 12 inch tongue, or proboscis, to feed on and pollinate the flower.

142 years later, that moth was found, exactly as evolution predicted.

God made the moth and the orchid at the same time, it just took science 150 years to find the moth. ;)

Yes, that's the only logical answer.

I don't think Darwin said the moth didn't exist yet, I think the main point is that the flower and the moth co-evolved. Why else would a moth have a tongue that long?

Evolution rules, Literally. Darwin knew what kind of animal would have to exist to drive the evolution of this plant (and visa-versa) and he was proven right. this is a great example of a scientific theories power to make predictions.

Creatures and plants evolve and adapt to their environments slowly over time - this is nature and I believe it to be fact.

However, when humans change the climate drastically in a short amount of time, this doesn't let evolution catch up. It makes you wonder where our world is headed.

Jethro, I see trouble a' brewin'.
