You could start by getting a domain name. People would actually then care about your forum and it would be easier to remember too. No one respects a forum without a domain name.

Maybe try a free domain then? You'll have ads but at least it's a start

dont create generic forums....they dont last....make sure your forum is about a specific niche.....

and then try seo for traffic.......put ur keyword in ur domain.........create fake accounts and build up post counts.......create backlinks (alot) and do some article marketing.....

and pay the $10 for a domain

IMO if you cant afford a domain and hosting ($100/year) then you are in the wrong field.

    Yes exactly.
It is useless to run a forum without a domain name.
You can get use free hosting till you get low traffic and then shift to paid one once you have few bucks in your hand.

When could anyone in the western world not afford a domain name? Buy a domain name, shove your keyword very specific to your niche in the name and then fake post hundreds of posts.

If you don't have money to put into the business then you're going to have to accept that you will need to put in hours and hours of time. Get friends to help post etc.

I think by organizing contest or referral program you can get new members, however make sure adding useful threads to attract visitors.

    Hi !
    First of all you need
    1) a domain name related to the topic of yours
    2) lots of content(paid posting service-usual rate is $0.10 to $.15 per post)
    3) some backlinks (directory submission, blog posting etc)

And if you can't afford these, don't waste your time in forum. Do some thing else, that could give you something in the return of your effort.
