What to do if my Video Site fails?

Guys, I am planning to start a video site.
Streaming video modeled after youtube, etc...
I will have to spend maybe $1,500 on a custom script
(maybe more maybe less who knows?)

Then I will need to spend money on bandwidth (man that will cost a lot!)
Maybe my site will fail - it is a possibility.

If I decide to stop my site, what can I do to get the most money back?
Sell the site and sell the script?
Would I be able to make up my losses if I had a sweet script?

I am trying to understand the risk I will be taking in starting the video site/

i think you can get a script for a lot lett than that try looking for a freelancer to make the script look on freelance sites like 1stchoicefreelancer.com

i am sure if you want to sell the script someone will be interested in it.

If this video site is going to have the same functionality and features as youtube then I'd say don't waste your time. Competing with a huge site like youtube will cost a lot of money just trying to advertise/SEO/PPC etc. and youtube is well known around the world. If you want people to use your video site instead of youtube you'll need to think of something unique to offer the user that youtube doesn't have. Maybe then it will be worth it.

guys i am obviously not trying to compete w/ youtube or redtube.
im hitting a niche that is focused and not over saturated with hundreds of sites.

I will need to make a unique script: to seperate myself
I dont wanna buy some script evry1 has already.

Assuming i get my custom script, what are some options if my site dosn't work out?

I think you can get a good script for some money and then customize it the way you want to "separate your self"...

I just started my video site and I am going to customize it : http://www.lebanonvideos.net

Let me know if you are interested in such scripts.

I think you should go for it because it sounds like you have already made up your mind.

Over the last two years I have had two really good ideas. My first one that I am currently doing costs basically nothing and it will take 3-4 years to fully complete and after that there will still be plenty of work to do. Although it will take this long to complete, it should be making money by the end of the year.

The second idea will also be cheap to maintain but not to start up and the domain could be expensive to acquire however I am not going to risk money out of my savings, I am going to save up enough money through revenue from my websites and freelancing here on DP.

I would be doubtful that you would recover all of your losses since just cause you paid $1,500 for the script, does not mean other people will value the script at the same price. Someone could potentially value it even more, but I would say there's a greater likelihood that they will value it less.

However depending on how much you actually end up spending, you could recoup some of your losses.

If u cant gain success u will looose lost money if u cant get buyer or even partner, my advice run with one good partner who have the ability to compete and run in bad situation.

    That's a horrible quote! lol.

    @ gder01

You don't sound confident in your website whatsoever. Every businessman or woman out there has to invest $$$ into a site at some stage. Don't let failure scare you away from investing, be determined to succeed.

I don't mean to criticise by any means. Making necessary precautions for failure and being as risk averse as possible is definately a good move, throwing money down a sink doesn't benefit anyone.

I strongly suggest that if you are investing any large % of your income, that you do enough market research before you invest a dime.

    - Make sure that your niche doesn't have large barriers to entry. I.e Start up costs + long term costs. Tough competition will also limit your success (YouTube, Break, NothingToxic).
    - Make sure that your niche differs enough from as much of your competition as possible.
    - Get honest opinions off friends/family/internet randoms about the potential success of your new site.
    - Invest your initial money into liquid assets that have 0 sunk costs so that you can resell and take back as much of your losses as possible.

    I don't like this reasoning.
Mainly I don't want to lose all the money i invested in a side project. Regardless if I can afford it.

Ill admit, losing $1500 wont make or break me. It will however, make me feel defeated, and not very confident about trying to start websites and make money with them.

Maybe starting off with a cheap script, and then working up to a nicer one is the way to go? Or would changing/improving the sites design after i have 1,000 customers be too difficult?

Trust me, buying a pre-built script or using open source is usually almost always better than doing cheap custom work. Try VideoWatchPro or Clip-share. I use clipshare.. but the code is such shit i would almost recommend doing it custom lol. $1500 will not get you a very good youtube site.

Possible ways to recoup your losses on $1500:
Turn the script into a youtube clone product and sell on DP
Sell the site as an established site with custom coding
Learn to make a profit with your site in the first place

For real or just one of those pretend "cheat" programs?
If you are actually a legit poker player I'd like to know who you are and what site you play :D $1000 a day = professional player.

The main thing is staying confident. If you stay confident, then you will have partial success already. Stick to your idea and run with it. If it fails, then venture into something different.

Why are you starting this site? How is it better than YouTube? What is the value proposition. Personally, I think you will fail. I don't see how a startup direct competitor to Youtube can succeed - hey, even Google Videos failed (and they had to go out and buy Youtube).

    I wish I made $1,000 a day
my signature says $1,000 a month though :(

I could make prolly $4,000-$5,000 a month playing poker online if i played full time. Most ppl feel it is impossible to beat. And that is what my video site is gunna be about. I want to teach people how you can beat this game.

    I play on:
    Full Tilt
    Poker Stars
    Ultimate Bet

Most players lose money, b/c the don't understand the correct strategy. I will have tutorials and stuff discussing how to beat the game.

This is not a competitor to youtube. It is just using the youtube design to compete in another niche.

If that is all you can make a month you have no reason to try to teach others. There are others, better qualified, who are covering the subject.
