I'm going to update this regularly with articles and info I find on this topic. The goal is to make sure people have an opportunity to be informed about what is going on around us.

Everyone should research and draw their own conclusions, but at least we won't have the crisis we see on so many other topics, where history and context, let alone understanding, is completely lacking.

Pentagon: Colleges must hand over names

Under rules that will take effect April 28, defense officials said they want the exact same access to student directories that is provided to all other prospective employers.

Students can opt out of having their information turned over to the military only if they opt out of having their information provided to all other recruiters, but schools cannot have policies that exclude only the military, defense officials said in a March 28 notice of the new policy in the Federal Register.

The Defense Department â€œwill honor only those student â€˜opt-outsâ€™ from the disclosure of directory information that are even-handedly applied to all prospective employers seeking information for recruiting purposes,â€ the notice says.

Directories are an important recruiting tool because they include the names, birthdates, phone numbers and academic pursuits of college students that can be used to identify people with knowledge and interests that are particularly useful to the military.

Despite denials, military still studying clandestine use of blogs

It was revealed this week by Wired that a study written for the U.S. Special Operations Command in 2006 recommended "clandestinely recruiting or hiring prominent bloggers" in order to promote messages favorable to the military. It also raised the possibility of altering an "enemy blog" by hacking to destroy its credibility or use it to spread false information.

The military has downplayed this study as an "academic exercise," but its conclusions appear to match closely with a strong and growing focus by the Pentagon on what it calls "information warfare."

Not only is it a waste of resources, but since when has being antiwar been a crime?

Don't you just love paying taxes so the government can target and spy on you? It gets better though. This is just another rabbit hole they through money down, and when they close this department, they will just roll it tighter to the bureaucratic bosom, so it can't be discovered, investigated, and questioned.

On March 31, Peter Dale Scott posted an informative piece on CounterPunch asking that very question. Why is Congress being sandbagged by the Bush administration on the thorniest of issues: the suspension of the U.S. Constitution and the potential declaration of martial law in the event of a â€œcatastrophic national emergency.â€ Scott writes,

In August 2007, Congressman Peter DeFazio, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, told the House that he and the rest of his Committee had been barred from reviewing parts of National Security Presidential Directive 51, the White House supersecret plans to implement so-called â€œContinuity of Governmentâ€ in the event of a mass terror attack or natural disaster.

While it is certainly a reasonable proposition to most citizens that the federal government should be prepared for disasters, man-made or otherwise, throughout its history COG has been tainted by its proximity to repressive police measures directed against the population (viewed as a hostile force to be â€œcontainedâ€), up to, and including the use of the bluntest of instruments: martial law.

Yet the Bush administration, driven by its desire to maximize power within the Executive branch, has used COG as a cover for creating a â€œpost-Constitutionalâ€ police state.

Mueller seemed to suggest that the bureau should have a broad "omnibus" authority to conduct monitoring and surveillance of private-sector networks as well.

Actually, all of the cameras and face recognition, and soon walking profile recognition you guys have in the UK freaks the hell out of me. What happened to being able to take a stroll and kick a can down the road? Now you have to worry about being recorded and monitored if you pick your nose.
