SATA hard drives

I don't know much about the subject, but I was looking into buying another HD for my desktop and I'm not sure if a SATA HD would be fine.

Any idea if I can expect it to be suitable for my HP desktop or how I can find out?

    Thanks!

if you don't have an SATA HDD for your desktop now then don't buy one...it isn't worth the effort (i think you need to install an SATA adapter in one of your PCI slots. instead, get one with the next computer you buy.

Buddy that totally depends on your PC's mother board. Open a side panel and look which hard disk is there. If its ATA or PATA then its obvious that SATA will be of no use to you!! :)

Yeah, I was just hoping there was an easier way than opening the case, it's placed in an awkward way, but whatever, I'll open it up I guess.

    Thanks!

Lots of motherboards can handle SATA and PATA. Open it up and have a look.
I'm running both - one of my drives is 10 years old :p

You could always just buy an external USB drive.

That would be better, but I wanted a permanent option and avoid clutter.

And although it doesn't really make a big difference, external ones are more expensive.

Just get a SATA, worse come get a converter. A SATA is the most common drives on the market.

Since you have a "reputation beyond repute", it might make perfect sense to just buy a decent SATA...
