Sorry to say but ive never had any trouble finding domains (brand new) for my directories or any other sites. :)

I think its better going for a keyword in the domain, for brandable you really do have to have big plans, its not easy to brand and i rarely see it done.

All the brandable/keyword directory .com's are gone. Example hotdirectory, nicedirectory, hotdirectory etc etc.

Directories as we know can be flipped quickly for good profit so the domains vanish pretty fast.

Glad I got a keyword nobody else was interested in :)

I am not a big fan of "directory" in the domain name.
I can't think of a keyword for general directories.
niche directories however can benefit a lot from the niche keyword in the domain name.

If I were working with a client who was looking for business consulting advice, I would steer them away from using the word 'directory' or similar in their URL. Many of the easy names like hotdirectory, bestdirectory, topsites, etc are already taken so now folks are coming up with some truly ridiculous names simply to have their "keyword" in their URL. The "seo professionals" seem to have declared all out war against directories in order to protect their businesses - IMHO, a quite short sighted view on things. Anything like freelinks, paidlinks, etc would also run the risk of attracting the wrong sort of attention from Google.

The folks who are going to un-pronounceable 5 and 6 letter domains are making an even bigger mistake. I saw one the other day that used something like hgqrt.com and then their site banner said their site was called "Johnny's Free Web Directory". (sorry, don't remember the real URL and name, but I am not exaggerating the example in the least bit)

Were I to start a general directory (not likely) or work with a client starting one, I would send them off to figure out why folks would visit their site and how they envision their site being used and think about words like resource, list, etc. And it is not impossible to invent a brand! Aviva is the most obvious example in the directory world of that.

Like with naming any site, branding has to be part of the process as much as SEO concerns. Simply finding an adjective and sticking it in front of or behind the word 'directory' is going to do very little to help you stand out from all the other thousands of general directories already out there.

okaaaaaaay, i quite agree with what you said,
tonight i have registered a new domain DirectoryXXXX,
i don't know if it will more easily get attention by google than DirXXXX.
anyway i prefer Directory to the short term Dir.

Look at people like mikey. He's built a brand around the word zorg, and it does stick. It is still possible to find a good, decent, brandable domain (plug: check out My Brand New Brand), and build it from there. You will become a lot more authorative than - say RKSH.com, or facelessdirectory.com.

(By the way from somebody with a directory in the URL, and with "-"'s ;))

It was zorg-directory. Brand and keyword.

I wasn't exactly the first. Avivadirectory, alivedirectory.....its all been done before.
