Link Relevance?

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by ealvin, Mar 23, 2006.

In setting up reciprocal linking how concerned should I be with the relevance of link partners to my site's theme?

It strikes me that even perfectly appropriate linking relationships can be so complex and non-obvious that it would be unbelievably difficult for Google on any SE to accurately evaluate and make determinations on what is and what isn't an "appropriate" link.

    So, my questions are ...

    1. Can Google really identify (and do they punish) sites with non-relevant links?

    2. Should we accept a reciprocal link from a non-relevant site? Does it help us more than it harms us?

Does anyone have any factual information on this?

    Thanks.

Exchange links with site themed websites. Imagine there are no searchengines and you are exchange links to get your visitors to something they might want to look at

Yes google can detect what and who are linking to you (they pick up themes)

Links from anything and anybody is going to hurt you in the long run.

You want your link page to look good from a human visitor's standpoint.

    Thanks guys for your info.

I should have made this clear. In this instance I'm really referring to getting links for Adsense sites, so my primary purpose isn't so much to draw traffic from the links but to use the links to help get a higher page rank.

Given this, what thoughts do you have on this strategy?

Do you see a problem using non-relevant links?

Thanks again for your great help.

What do you mean by that?

Back to your question, I would only accept links from relevent sites. Like someone above posted, build your resources list for your visitors. If you take a look at my resources directory, you will notice I only include relevant sites.

Virtually any inbound link is good, but try and keep your outbounds to relevant sites. An inbound link from a relevant site though is much better, so you should try and aim for these.

There are many sites and directories that will link you without a reciprocal link but you've got to work a bit to find them.
