Has anyone done a Marathon?

I am thinking of attempting one next year. I do occasional running from time to time and can easily run around 8K. Next year and the end of this year, I will have loads more free time which I could use for training. If anyone else has done a marathon please share your story including training, diet, etc and most importantly you time! Thanks in advance.

Exercise regularly, maybe alternate aerobic and long distance run so that you can develop your lungs. Short and long distance. Food wise I am less careful because it is very hard for me to keep to a diet. But main thing is still perparing about at least 3-6 months before with short and long distance. Never think of running a marathon for each practice, you will kill yourself, maybe 5-10 km for long run.

Do get a medical check up first just in case before starting because the actual finishing does require a lot from your body as well as tons of determination. Time wise I am not going to say :) certainly not like those Kenyans and Ethiopians........but to me, to be able to finish one is already an achievement.

You will need to train up before that definitely, few people can just sign up and run a full marathon. Quite an enduring challenge.

you should be a world class athlete its not easy to run 42 kilometers.

You better asked this on some sport community as here most people spend from morning to evening behind computer hardly you find any super fit person.

Any normal being can do it. Just that you will need about 3 to 6 months of regular training to do it. Not possible if you sit behind a computer an entire day. But it is a good resolve to train for a marathon, it helps to keep you fit if you are discipline enough to carry on with the training expected. Although it would be easier if you can find your local marathon club. Running alone is a darned boring business.

I agree, it can get boring and unless you have some deep motivational quote such as "proving x wrong, or making y proud" I think you'll struggle unless as said above you are in good company! Good luck.

My friend has completed 2 marathons so far - I am hoping to run one next year.
A lot depends on the weather, according to those who have run. Just be prepared for the worst.
When you said 8, I guess you meant km? So 5 miles?

Most of those whom I talked to said this site gives pretty decent information: Marathon Training Tips
(That is from the Boston Marathon site)

    Make a plan for
    1. Training
    2. Rest
    3. Food

Keep track of all of these, and monitor regularly.

You will have setbacks (off-days, too tired, work/etc) - so the plan should have enough buffer time.

Next year, hopefully, I can tell you my first hand experience.
    Best of luck.

Running alone is the best way to do it... Just me and my iPod. :D

I've considered training for a marathon, but I don't think it will ever happen... For now, 4 miles at a time is my max, and I am happy with that. :D

My first marathon was a few years ago down in LA. Me and the wife were going down there for the weekend and found out a week earlier that my friends were runing in it. So I went and bought running shoes that weekend and ran the whole race in 5 hours 20 minutes. Not bad since I hadnt run since high school and I was 29yo.
I didnt get a blister either. But I am active. I go on a 30 mile backpack trip every year with the guys. Oh the worst part of it was the run was on a sunday and we left LA for SF at like 5pm and I had to drive a stick shift home 350+ miles and then went to work at 5am....haha
But it was a great feeling. I suggest everyone do it at least once.
    Good Luck

Well it is a great experience, but I would suggest those who haven't exercise for decades, get a medical first :)
