What ads are best for forums?

I'm currently using adsense on my forums(in my sig), It's set to text + images, which would be better for my forums? Text only or images only? I don't get many clicks, but 2-3 = $1. It's just no one is clicking.

Any suggestions on what ads to use, any program will do if you think I'll see a little more income.

Have you tried using the setup that DP uses? I would think if any site would know how to advertise of a forum it would be the owners of this - or perhaps sitepoint/warriorforum. Observe the leaders and copy their strategies for success.

I noticed when the same ad diplays for too many days on my forum the ctr drops bigtime. I guess this is because theres so many repeat users.

Yes text ads, I hate image ads in forums because it just makes the forums look unorganized. Just make sure you have a lot of members before adding ads to your site because you might make the other members leave for making the site adfull (and yes, I just invented that word).
    Good luck :)

Thought I would add this as well -- Do what DP does, put the ads inbetween posts.
    Hope this helps!

I've had marginal success with Adsense on forums. Try experimenting with where you place it - like between the first and second posts in a thread, or right after the last post.

I find text ads preform better on my sites. I personally can't stand looking at image ads so they won't be on my site ever. The best thing to do is set up channels and try different placements, color variations, sizes. Some places you may want to try are in between the Mark Forums Read and the sites stats, after every 1st post, or at bottom of the posts. Hope that helps some.

since PPC doesn't work for you, why not sign up at a CPM network?

Banner ads, if relevant to the topics of the forum, would make it look more professional and at the same time secure you a guaranteed monthly income.

I agree Turbulence...From a publisher's perspective, banner ads may appear more appealing. However, performance based advertisers will generally steer towards text ads because of the "required action" involved.

Text ads are better, but don't use PPC ads, they don't do well on forums. CPM ads are better ;)

as discussed here before. Frequent forum users gets ad-blind. GO for CPM ads. NOT POP-UPS! no one likes them.

I do not know with "background pops". i forgot how to call it. my memory. :(

I've had some success with Kontera though the click through amount is pretty poor compared to Adsense.
