HTML Headings Appropriate Length?

Is it bad for SEO to have HTML headings that have too many words?

It is bad for the title tag, so I assume the same happens for the headings, is that correct?

    Thanks!!

You should only have (1) h1 tag per page and it should focus on one keyword/keyword phrase that you are trying to have the page rank for. Adding a bunch of words just dilutes the effectiveness.

H1 tag is basically used to let search engine know your website theme. So we only should use it once on the page..

Here we go again... please read and understand what the thread starter is asking before replying!

$earner, your headings, just like the contents of your <title></title> tag, should be clear, concise and to the point. Keep them short, and don't try to be clever.

For example, <h1>Top Ten Free PC Security Software Programs of 2007</h1> is clearly better than <h1>Check out the top ten free computer security applications that blew their commercial competitors out of the water in 2007!</h1>

Actually it does matter, Davin. The more words in the headings, the greater the chance that the strength/weight of the keywords in them can be diluted.
