The Greatest Thing Since... uh, Scrambled Eggs? The Crazy Egg Heat Map!

Crazy Eggs. I had no idea where to really put it, except that it might be directly applicable to AdSense to define those heatmap sweetspots.

Anyways... It's a REALLY sweet heatmap software (still in beta) that I just stumbled upon. I suppose it's similar to Google Analytics, but since I don't have it I have nothing to compare it to.

It creates a heat map using Javascript by where your visitors click, similar to the eyetracking study that was posted (except, uh, different with clicks vs eyeballs):
    http://www.poynterextra.org/eyetrack2004/advertising.htm

It's like stat counter on steroids because now you know exactly where your users are clicking, can define those SWEET spots on your page, as well as the odd trouble area.

    Board I saw it on:
    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=356793

    Someone's blog on it:
    http://mashable.com/2006/03/10/crazy-egg-is-crazy-delicious/

    Their home page:
    http://www.crazyegg.com/

I’m already a bit compulsive with my stats, but this is going to send me straight over the edge!

Yeah yeah, definately going to give me a good indication on some of my high traffic sites. Currently using clicktracks on that site.

So will be interesting to see a more visual approach, rather then just figures next to links.

It just occured to me - what if this is a site for collecting emails for spaming?? It is possible, we are all going there and leaving our email addresses. Is it even possible to track clicks like that?
I really hope it is not spam site :)

Excellent site - should be an interesting way to look at our own sites rather than looking at heatmaps of "generic" sites that may have no comparison with our own. Thanks Playboy!

Thanks for the information!!! The site looks extremely useful! With that, now we'll able to know where's the hot zone on your own site and implement useful stuff on it.

    Cheers!

which is why it's advisable to have several email addresses solely for signing up for offers. :)

The click counts are pretty much the same as Site Overlay in Google Analytics which is pretty useful. With the colored bars, you get a visual assessement of which links recieve the clicks.

If you don't have Google Analytics, I'd say give this service a try.

I'm pretty curious about the heat mapping portion. It is just a different rendering of the click data? Or are they capturing where the mouse moves?

Maybe they use your webcam to see where you are looking. Get out your aluminum foil hats!

Well, here's the thing it SEEMS to be tracking clicks even when it's NOT on a LINK.

One reason may be that the interface is not entirely intuitive discerning what click goes where, but it LOOKS like I'm getting some clicks on just non-linked text.

Like on my blog, I still have yet to update certain portions of my right side bar menu and I have some of those + click symbols on the text... which shows me (if I'm reading it correctly) I have readers who assume that those links are working. And then there are other symbols distributed kind of randomly but don't SEEM to be connected to a link.

Who knows? there's no help interface so I'm kind of left guessing at this point.

Still, tres cool. Visually, it looks like my visitors trace out a ? mark shape visual scan.

I was able to sign up back when.

It's definitely a fun little program, though it still has drawbacks and doesn't seem fully implemented. But I think it definitely has a bright future.
