There is a family living nearby in a house that runs on 100% solar power...They are sick of it and want to go back to grid power.

Looks crap. They should have changed the logo instead to show a broken light bulb or something.

Maybe they could save on some electricity themselves and shut down the 10 billion servers for an hour.

    Not going to happen though:p

I can see Google doing this for the "publicity" and the fact that they know the other search engines will feel like people will think they're bad for not doing a "big thing" these days.

Earth Hour is not neccessarily as much about the actual conservation of energy taking place DURING Earth Hour, but about the social and political awareness raised as a result of it.

Andy Ridley wanted to stress the importance of saving energy in the form of "earth hour" by switching off lights for one full hour in 26 cities today. I don't know how people will cope with that especially who are not used to power cuts. May this concept sow the seeds for the conservation of biodiversity and prevention of global warming.
One simple point is switch off the lights, fans, AC when not in use. This can be followed daily, leave alone on March 29th. Thus we do our bit to preserve our planet from degradation. Cheers :)

I would agree on that. It is the social and political awareness that is the most important for Earth Hour. Through such events, it is to drive the awareness to the general public.

The idea around turning off the lights for an hour is not to save power at that point (you are correct in that). It is to raise awareness...ie its a PR excercise to keep this type of the thing at the front of your mind.

So, the next time you leave a room you may turn the lights off (which as has been said is far more effective)
