I guess you need to first find out what payment processor you are going to use. There are many carts out there and each one works a little differently. Check on the payment processors and then find out what carts are compatible with them.

Get yourself a decent web host and find a cart script you like and go with that, set up PayPal or whatever payment gateway you want to use. If you want to process credit cards directly in your site you will need an SSL Certificate in order to be able to do this. If you want to have them go to PayPal or wherever to pay automatically and come back you won't need SSL.

As for setting the cart up and the merchant account specifically for your business in mind, it's not simple enough for anybody to be able to tell you which cart or gateway you should use or how you should go about using it. Generally any new business is going to have some sort of initial investment requirement, otherwise *everybody* is doing what it is you are about to do, and you're not likely to become profitable, or at least not within the first year.

    Good luck.

I'm using Zen-Cart. It's the same as OSCommerce only a bit more user friendly. I did some tweaking (and I'm not an PHP expert) and it does everything I want it to do. If your webhost has Fantastico it's a one-click install and there you go.

I just got into ZenCart, but everyone seems to be talking about Magento.

Magento sure looks cool, but changing the design of the site seems complicated compared to ZenCart.

Magento is far superior to OSC or Zen and it is actually easier to do design changes. I have used many cart systems and CMS in the open-source market and nothing is near the quality of magento.

I generally agree. Magento looks great. However, here is an honest Magento shopping cart review discussing some performance issues that large stores are currently facing.

i've used Avactis for one of my clients, it's ok. the admin interface is neat and lots of functions - gallery, mailing list, cart on/off, etc. Google them and try the free demo on site!

CS-cart is what i am using on my new store, i use oscommerce on my other store. CS-cart blows oscommerce away. I also tried to install magneto but after 15 hours i said forget it!. I have a VPS and its way to much of a pain to install. I know linux good but that thing was asking for too much

I am using Zen Cart, I am happy with their highly customization and flexibility of the shopping cart. The payment gateway is using Paypal.com. My ebooks store is fully automated from the buyer > Payment > Download ebook... I have nothing to do with the shipping and delivery at all. And this solution is absolutely FREE...
