    Hi all,

Is it ok to take news from other sites and reproduce some of it on a site.

Say if there is a news article on Bird Flu on a site can I go to that site and copy the text from the news article and paste the first paragraph into a news article on my site?

I would also put the source and a link to the source after the paragraph..

    any advice would be appreciated,

    thanks,
    regards

A whole paragraph may be pushing it.

I tend to paraphrase the story, quote one to two sentences and link to the original.

I would suggest treating the quote as if you were writing a paper for school. A nice way to emphasize that it is from another article is the blockquote tag which produces the following:

"this is the quoted text from the article you were inspired by. Using this format makes it very clear that the text is from another source."

    source: original article link

Doesn't matter, you need to ask permission first. You can do it, but realize they might see it and ask you to take it down. Some big sites actually don't like links coming in, and have in the TOA that you need to ask permission to do that. Although most people on the internet break copyright laws left and right.

I think alot depends on where you get said article. I C&P articles all the time and then we dicuss said articles on my site. I give credit to where the article came from with the link. Most of the articles come from different news sources.

The news is there to read but you must also remember if people like myself didnt print these on other sites these said news sites would be damn near dead. Count the number of backlinks they get from republished articles because of sites like mine.

I say a well known news site like CBS,NBC,CNN,FOX,ABC ect will not say anything unless you dont leave the credit that is due and they stuble accross it while surfing the net.

Now if you go to joe snuffys site and copy his article he may have a problem with it.

    Just my opinion

I think you have to provide them link back to the site or putting acknoledgement to the site.Dont treat it that it is your writing..That's the way you will not get sue.or just quote it.

    I agree with PGZ.

You could put a notice somewhere that if anyone was unhappy with their article being used, you would be glad to remove it.

Your best bet though is to write your own news based on the source. Put it in your own words and then cite them as a source from where you received your information. Gives credit and is not considered plagerism.

    Howdy,

We cut/paste news articles all the time on the various forums I frequent. In addition to the text we always include the authors name and link back to the original source. Haven't had an issue yet. :)

Not quite. There is a principle of fair use in copyright law. This is why journalists do not get sued for copyright infringement when including quotes from other, copyrighted sources in their articles. Having said that, plagiarizing an article by simply rewording it, can create problems and should be approached with caution. It is better to work from numerous sources when writing material.

You are correct. This is why citing sources and writing an article in your own words about what you perceive to be the truth is the best way to go. Make sure your facts are straight and your sources are credible.

As for quoting an article in a forums as stated earlier that is fine as long as you do cite where the original work came from and provide a link for the credit. You avoid legal issues. You may also do this in an article you are writing as it is done everyday. Again as long as you cite the source.

Of the above, one thing most people seem to not get is this:
That means you can quote parts (with attribution), but not whole articles.

Correct. Unless given explicit permission to do so and that usually is in the form of a written document that serves as proof from the originating source and grants use of the article with any stipulations that the source might decide to make on the use of the content.
