    The W3C Validator will tell you what's wrong with your document and you go through and fix it. Something like:

    Error! Alt not Defined or Omitted on Line 32

    Code (markup):
    (this is an example, it's been a long time since I've actually had to visit the W3C validator, TidyHTML plugin for FireFox makes life easier)

    Would mean that you left the alt="" attribute out of an img tag on line 32 of the document.

    If you still need help you can email me or msn me at:

    Of course it depends on the error, but fixing most html errors will not increase your rankings. Most large sites (yahoo, google - even adobe) don't validate. You'll sometimes see a hundred or more errors on #1 ranking sites.

    Valid HTML or xHTML will not increase your rankings in ayway. good, semantic code will make it easier for bots to crawl your page, and make your site seem more professional.

    I wholeheartedly disagree. Search engines will index your site, regardless of code. It makes absolutely zero difference. It can affect cross browser pagges, and may not render well on screen readaers, but it makes no difference in Search Engine Rankings.

    And http://validator.w3.org is the official validator to use.

    well it does affects ur ranking indirectly

    more proper and nice code u have, u get more visitors, and those who visit u once, they visit again

    so indirectly increasing ur ranking

    valid code does NOT AFFECT YOUR SEARCH ENGINE PLACEMENT!!!!!!! Creating valid code is a very good thing.. it's much easier to work with and it makes your site more accesible and universal.. however it does not matter in terms of SEO.

    See these top websites... look at how crummy their code is but look how good their sites are:

    amazon.com = 1541 errors
    abc.com = 164 errors
    google.com = 51 errors
    yahoo.com = 34 errors
    myspace.com = 159 errors
    about.com = 82 errors
    sitepoint.com = 13 errors
    nbc.com = 108 errors
    digitalpoint.com = 142 errors

    If you want to gain SE traffic, don't waste time on clean code. It should be a lower priority than every SEO tactic out there. Focus on building backlinks and making quality content.

    Don't get me wrong... you should always use valid xhtml code but if your site has 0 errors as oppose to 22 errors.. it won't make a different in your rankings.

    If valid code determined good SERP, don't you think Google would clean up their code and practice what they preach?

    Don't worry about it so much for SEO but there are several other reasons you should have valid code (ADA. DDA etc) Unfortunately, if you use some Adsense or CJ code on your page it probably won't validate.

    adsense is valid code... but companies like CPX interactive have junk code that they make you copy and paste into your sites to display their ads. HOWEVER.. there is a way to combat this issue. Put the code in an iframe ;)

    Well I have never visited a site becuase of the "nice code", and I am sure that the average web user doesn't even understand the concept of valid code.

    so need not worry about correcting the code as to w3c standards as it won't make much difference. is that so?
