i (well everybody) know that if you want to rank for specific keyword you have to use it as your anchor text....

but let's say if you want to rank up for SEO Marketing keyword

and if you use SEO Marketing - MYSITE.COM will that be the same and give you the same value in Google and Yahoo??!?! :)

Not sure but I focus on different key word strings when i make my backlinks. The variations are on the theme of the site but almost all sites have visitors using different key words when they search.

Sure it will work. I would vary the anchor text from time-to-time. If you use the same one on every article or Press Release it looks like you are trying to jive the SE...and you are so mix it up a bit, but keep the themes the same.

    Good luck

    My dear friend

It will work only when you give too many backlinks double than the keyword "SEO MARKETING" then only you can get top for both the keywords "seo marketing" and "site.com" by merely targeting "seo marketing - site.com"

Secondly instead of targeting which this phrase you can use two separate keywords which will help you to judge better.

Cool Mate and Enjoy your day

It's better to use the word "SEO Marketing" only. Target only the specific keyword. If the second one is your targeted keyword, then use it but I prefer the first one.

Yeah make sure you mix it up a bit. Having big spurts, or constant links coming through (non natural links, I mean yourself link building) with the same anchor text is kind of obvious that you're trying to jip the system. Google likes sites link building patterns to look natural.

This may be a bit too complex, but worth reading, You will learn semantic relations SEs have track of.

nice.... to add to that, the purchase of applied semantics was 2003... then in 06 they picked up Anna Patterson whom then wrote some Google patents on Phrase Based Indexing and retrieval... this also deals with semantic relationships...

    from Phrase Based Optimization Resources

..... I also wrote a post on relevance and SEO - which touches on the concepts.

Certainly an important part of the SEO mix IMHO.... it is not merely the link text, but the associated page topics, surrounding text and more....

In the simplest form tho, in yor original example, the 2 texts would be treated differently

Varying anchor text is good but it's better to target other keywords as opposed to a phrase as in the OP.

well it wont have as much weight

an example of how it works - i have commented numerous blogs as "Matt Saunders" linking to www.space-clothing.co.uk. if you search "Matt Saunders" in google, you will find Space Clothing is number 4 (just below my personal portfolio site - which has a higher keyword density of "Matt Saunders" than Space - which has none).

hope this helped a little. google's alghorthyms are crazy (i cant even spell it)
