The issue now isn't about rights to demostrate or beating up of Chinese migrants there. The issue is China is strong and Tibet is weak. There is no USA or anyone in the horizon willing to assist other than pay lip service. Dalai Lama was advocating autonomy rather than independence, which I think is a more practical move given the difference in bargaining power. From the reports I see, it is the radical elements in Tibet that are creating the riots as they had grown too frustrated and impatient over the progress of the dialog. It is really time that China acts upon this and give more autonomy to Dalai Lama who is moderate and who is for an autonomous Tibet rather than an independent Tibet.
Agreed. After decades of subjugation and the influx of the chinese it is a wonder Tibetans still protest. Autonomy is more practical and the best option now.
Funny, if tibet had oil, the US would be right in there to help them 'Gain Independence' Personally I think everyone should boycott the Chinese olympics, even have a Free Olympics somewhere else in support of Tibet.
I don't think so, it is too tough a bone for USA, even if there is oil. Olympics wise till now no indications of any countries supporting Tibet. I guess those who do face the wrath of the mighty Chinese economy and military.
Olympics is for peace and unity of the world, I strongly agree with you. Human race already politicized enough of all things, just leave the Olympics alone.
Olympics should not be dragged into this controversy otherwise we would be dragged into the cold war scenario where US and erstwhile Soviet Union boycotted olympics to the detriment of a generation of athletes. But the Chinese reponse was highly disproportionate to the protests. Armored carriers and troops to supress what? Terrorists? Currently the chinese premier has asked Dalai Lama to prepare conditions for talks. A positive outlook but the fate of "surrendered" protesters remain unclear.

When I first read the title I thought it read "Chinese crackdown on Tibetan Terrorists"! I wonder if that's how China sees them...
Read wrongly me bad. If you allow cross borders matches into China, it can be considered as an intrusion, I am sure India would like a good relationship with China and vice versa. I don't think to India, Tibet is worth the troubles of getting into rocky relationships with China.
Probably not enough for even China consumption not to say export to the USA. Besides USA already had Iraq, hands are full enough and Iraq has one of the largest proven reserves of crude oil.
Taiwan is next on china's list.....china will pose serious threat to american might in coming years and the bully that china is, it will also pose threat to it's neigbours both by militirially and economically....
