How can I create a search engine?

Discussion in 'All Other Search Engines' started by NRLMedia, Mar 11, 2006.

    How can I create my own search engine? I don't want to compete with any of the others, not that it's possible or anything. I just want to have my own.

    Any ideas? Are there scripts for this?

    I have a great name in mind.

    Thanks in advance.

    Nick

    Rolloy.com or something like that rolly.com, im lazy. Allows you to make your own.. What do you want it for?

    Do you want a spidering se or a meta-searching, shopping, local, news, any ideas? LOL. It is a lot harder than you think. I started my SE back in Januaray of 2004 and it isn't even up Right now.. So yea..

    I want it just to say I have one.

    It doesn't have to be complex and I don't care if it uses other search results (if thats legal). I just want one that I can set as my homepage and use for searches.

    Why don't you use Google API to provide web search feature on your site? You will be limited to only 1000 queries per day. But it's worth trying as well as feasible. :D

    If you know some good programming than you can Use Lucene library. It is the best open source library for creating indexes and than retreiving information. Though it is mainly in Java but it's also availabe in C++/Python.Lucene is far more efficient than having flat file or simple relational databses. Lucene is used in search engines created by many universities.:)

    @sufyaan - Are you a fan of Daniel Vettori ? :D

    It might be easier to create a search engine but it could be tougher to maintain it. :D

    I just wrote a MySQL Boolean Search engine for my Amazon Book Store. The typical table only has about 5K rows max. There are two full text indexed fields.

    So far it seems crisp and returns relevant results . I'll let ya know what happens when I deploy it on all my domains.
