A question about Wifi / Wireless internet

    Hi,

I just bought an ipod touch. I am yet to open the pack :)

I have wireless internet in my home... thru linksys router (wireless LAN). Is it a WiFi? I am not sure. Whether it is possible to browse on Ipod touch with this network?

If not, how else do I setup a WiFi hotspot in my home with my regular internet connection?

What is the model # of your router? If it's a WLAN model, then yes, it's WiFi. Just setup a wireless network from your routers admin panel, and then connect your Touch to it.

If it's not, then you'll simply need to get a WiFi router. I've got a cheap D-Link G604-T that I run my PS3, PDA and laptops from, works like a charm.

Yes if you have a "wireless router" then it's wi-fi anything like 802.11a/b/g/pre-n/n are all wifi and will work with your ipod touch.

In addition to what is said above, bear in mind that unlike iphone, ipod touch does not support encrypted wireless network.

So, if you're running encrypted network (to prevent neighbors free access :D) on your wireless router, ipod touch is almost useless :( :p

I know nothing about the Touch - are you sure that it can't access encrypted networks? That's just crappy. Who runs an open wireless network from their own home?

What year are we living in here? :p

Not sure :( I read this in few reviews lately, can anybody confirm this

Maybe it does not support high-end encryption

I had a look on the Apple website - surprise surprise, "Wi-Fi (802.11b/g)" is all the info they give. pfft

I did some Googling, and found this.
Looks like the Touch supports 'standard WEP, WPA, WPA2', which is probably enough for most home networks.

You had me thinking that Apple had really dropped that ball on this one :p

Thanks a lot guys. As soon as i turned on the ipod it detected it and now i can browse almost everything in ipod touch. really really cool. I will post some pics of it soon!

BTW, I am in un-crypted network, so no problem. And the neighbors here dont even have a PC, so no problem again :)

You should really secure your network, you never know who's rolling around the neighbourhood - even in India :p

Double check the manual. If that says it has a wifi then its a ready wifi. Ussually theres an antenna connected there. If not you may visit the store and buy some wifi connectivity as an addition and wont cause too much
