From what I have been able to ascertain 40,000 and less is a good figure

I use micro niche finder and do extremely well 20,000 and under but under 50,000 is still pretty good

its not really the number its how stong they are. You may find a great little electronic section that only has 1000 competitors but if ToysRus is in the equation followed by other giant manufacturers, then you have yourself a monopoly and with it comes barriers to entry namely they simply block you from view.

long tailed key words for the win.

Obviously, zero competitors would be ideal, but that isn't likely to happen. But you can always come up with multi-word keyword combinations that have few competitors. Instead of "cars", you could easily rank high for "classic cars in New Hampshire" or "cheap used cars for sale from online web sites".

Sometimes too small an amount of competitors doesn't always mean it will be that great, it may be that then a niche is too small, no competitors because no ones interested.

Very true. If the niche gets no traffic then making money is next to impossible.
