it is very costy to patent a concept , if the person change 25 % of your concept it is not anymore under copyright law / Then you spent your many for nothing

It is easy to take your concept and make something better to do the same task. Especially when your concept is new and you have not refined it.

Depends where you want the patent, for the country your in, europe, the states or worldwide?

Are you 100% sure its not already done somewhere else?

Pipes made a great point. A worldwide patent will cost much more than just a US patent. Either way someone in china will steal your idea because there are no patent laws enforced in china.

do a patent search first. make sure it's not already done.
I learned that the hard way, with some bad advice.
search google for "do it your self" patents ( nolo press, jack Lo) I believe is one author.

unless you are extremely versed in technical descriptions, an IP lawyer will have to draw up the application.

Patenting a concept is not that great of an idea due to the reasons given by the people already. Even if you did have something really unique, there's always ways to change it enough that they aren't infringing on your patent. I think you'll spend a lot of money and end up disappointed.

Get a provisional patent $200 - don't waste time/money getting a world wide/US patent to difficult to monitor copycats without having an army of expensive lawyers.

Just build it and market it...see what happens then patent it with a full US patent if it pans out. Hit the market hard out of the gate and it will take a litle while for competitors to notice what's going on - don't tell people you make money from it and you'll have at least six months before someone else brings something similar to the table...that is if it is unique enough.

Do a search for Provisional Patent in Google or look up Stephen Key - I think his site is called http://www.inventright.com

    Good luck with that.

    In the U.S. : http://www.uspto.gov

But, I do not recommend getting one. Things move too quickly these days for a patent to be worth much. Just develop a good idea, execute on it, and constantly improve upon it - that is a better way of making sure it is not copied. :)
