Okay, I'm wondering whether to use http://blog.domain.com, or http://domain.com/blog The sole purpose of this WP blog is to build backlinks that will benefit the main site which is selling a product, as well as have the blog ranking on its own merit which should also drive some traffic. I'm curious to see what people think is the better option, or if it even matters. Thanks
Yes but is there any benefit, or reason for it? I'm looking for any reason why to use one method over the other.
The blog.domain is better because it is counted as a subdomain which is considered a separate site. You can also submit it to directories and other places as a separate site. The other way would be considered a page of the main site and would only be excepted in directories that allowed deep links.
Thanks, +rep left. This was what I was thinking, but actually the opposite. Surely if the whole point of the blog is to send link juice to the main site, then its best to be domain.com/blog? Otherwise if its seen as a separate site then the backlinks arent really doing me much good?
If I understand you, yes the juice will be passed internally with the domain.com/blog. Other wise, it would be like having a link on a separate site. However, you asked in the first post about having the blog used as a site built on its own merits. That would be the blog.domain.com way.
I want it to be able to rank in the se's for long tail stuff, but primarily I want the blog to be sending link juice to my main site on the same domain, as thats the one that puts food on the table. Thanks for the advice, its pretty much confirmed what I thought and I'll set it up on domain.com/blog
domain.com/blog is better than blog.domain.com because sub-domain always treated as separate domain. To promote it, need hard work like a single new domain. if you use /blog then some of the credit of main domain goes to sub folder. By doing a little work you can gain more. Like if you have some interlinking your sub domain with main site, it may get pr in next update. You may get better ranking for a folder than sub-domain. I always implement a sub-folder to create a blog.
